Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm

None of these things are related of course - parking issues, flags, the performance. All entirely independent.

But it just all adds up to the ‘mental picture of the day’ that will last. Kind of symbolic.

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

I realise that lots won’t like my Gareth Ainsworth shout but I do think he’s the sort of manager who would relish moulding a team that scraps for everything and overachieves. Alex Neil more I think about it is a very good shout. Young still with room to grow. Has a promotion to the championship and ...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

If we genuinely want to sign Ashworth then once again I think it shows a significant lack of judgement.

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

Do you think he in any way is the sort of manager to deliver a side that can do that? I get it mate, you have a "WWSD?" tattoo on your arse. I don't care how Sam would do it. If Evatt is the manager I care how he will do it. If it's someone else I'll care how he will do it. Sam was over 15 years ag...

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

The rumoured (and I stress rumoured) wages/bonuses to get these lads in through the door early at Rotherham are a bit eyewatering at this level. If there's any agent with a player who might fit they're walking barefoot to Rotherham if needed. Suppose we should be happy they're looking for different...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

It’s also the stuff that most irks me from those who continually make out he’s the greatest manager we could ever have. Has anyone actually said that? A lot of people seem to infer that. He’s lucky to be here not the other way round. There are managers with more experience and better records we cou...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Ian has been very clear that he views this club as a vehicle for his inevitable rise to the Premier League. We are very fortunate to get to rid his coattails as Jesus guides him on. If he views this as no longer where the lord intends for him to attain greatness, he may move on. When prophecy fails...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

It’s because I believe the system and how we play is exposed when stressed by pressure, well structured teams with enough quality. And I don’t think that is easily changed because I think the weak points are numerous and needing very specific players with very specific qualities. I don’t think we ca...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Specifically I’d say a 4231! Meh, numbers. Players have roles. The numbers don't really matter. If we switch to whatever your preferred system is who do YOU rely on being able to win League One next season? I'm not setting a trap, just wondering how many first 11 players you feel we'd need to top t...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

There are fewer wing backs - they are highly specialised roles and I think the quality we need in those positions to specifically make this system work is exceptionally high. You are looking for players with everything in their game. I don’t think it’s the same for example at centre half in a norma...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Not for me. I think the changes needed to make ‘tweaks’ would be too expensive. If Sharon has the money to get top quality wing backs then we can maybe do that but I’m not seeing it likely. Is that true of any player we need in when we attach the words "top quality" to them? Two "top quality" centr...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

I’d be reluctant too but I’d also make sure they have protection in front. Players to help head and kick it when necessary to take the pressure off the centre backs. Johnston reads the game better than anyone we’ve got and I think if you say to him and Toal you are here to head it, kick it and keep...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Worth noting that before we switched to a 3 some on here wanted Johnston out of the club, because he was "never a defender" in a back 4. That is absolutely not snark, by the way - but I think we'd have to assume that a Johnston coming back off a full year out and coming into a back four is unlikely...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm

So any manager who sets us up to concede 5 goals in 10 games and to have the sort of structure they showed in the run in will I think have more joy here. I have no issue with that. You can play differently to how we do and still have the same basic principles in place. The new manager doesn't have ...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Simple question for those who are (understandably) asking for a back four: who's your one central striker, in either the 4-3-3 or the 4-2-3-1? If it's Charles, and let's be honest he's easily our best source of goals, how does that help the total lack of 'stickability' we saw on Saturday? If it's n...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

I didn't like Sharon (to my eye) playing the gallery for a peerage in the commons the other day. Ditto. I was surprised she was there at all and was surprised again that she wasn't more measured in her comments. You don’t get peerages for select committee appearances so I think that’s wide of the m...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

I'm not Evatt out yet. I think I was on Saturday night and whilst I've still not fully simmered after a pathetic performance, I do have to look back at the good the bad and the ugly and wonder if anybody would've done a better job. I'm not sure.... What does concern me though, is where do we go fro...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm

Oxford's manager doesn't think he changed a huge amount tactically. He tweaked their midfield set up, but has said their approach didn't change vastly since they lost to us and he's right. He's certainly not a "building a whole club in my image" manager - he's a coach that slotted into an existing ...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm

You can say whatever you like but Oxford set up perfectly for that final. They didn’t come to be ‘pretty’. There was no nonsense. No ‘we have to play a high line and roll the ball around’. Whatever anyone says or whatever picture they paint - Oxford had that in their locker in spades. Same in the s...
