Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

What I keep coming back to is he refused to change it at half time. feck me if that wasn’t the time to go all Bruce Rioch when is? Should have put Victor and probably Dempsey on for jones and Sheehan and made them think. But we did not. We said ‘do plan a better’. Arghhhhhhhhhhh! Tactically the gam...

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

Indeed, which is why (like I said) we need balance in both formation and personnel. Last two seasons we’ve moved the dial from “good defence but attack not good enough” to “(intermittently) good attack but defence not good enough”. Does a back four fix that? Might depend who’s in it.

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

On another topic du jour - I would not be confident of top two if our RWB options are Cogz, Matheson, Jones. If we go back four, maybe (although we’d need a tall LB as none of those are grrrrrreat in the air). Iredale Yep, decent for that, but then that’s four “defenders” rather than three. Say we ...

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

Totals (goals scored, goals conceded) and averages (PPDA etc) will always be generalised. As you say, one-offs can be different - IF the manager has flexibility. Over the last two years we have got better at being different teams on different occasions - home to low blocks, away to big nasty teams. ...

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

Two teams. Oxford pressed well but we didn’t ask any different questions. They could have done it for hours on end. Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Looking across at ours and WW's polls. I think the tally whilst strongly against, as you'd expect maybe, after Saturday has absolutely narrowed but is still roughly 50/50. 115 for go and 114 stay, across the two. The arguments for and against are pretty similar, probably as you'd expect, but I just...

Also interesting is Luke Matheson on the senior retained list, with Evatt having said he will play a part next season in previous pressers.

Would require a squad place.
Same applies to Conor Carty, so we’ll see.

Oxford will have to announce theirs today too.

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Sarcevic has had his say on his departure. These failings out happen but if what he says is true…. He also said he didn't dance around and sing about Bolton, but he's on camera doing it. Why would anyone believe a word of the rest of it? https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/24336666.ex-bolton-wand...

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

Evatt confirms what we knew really: “It is going to be difficult to sign Paris now we are stuck in League One. That is how it is. We are thankful for him, thankful for what he has achieved this season, and we wish him well.”

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

Regan Riley released by Norwich. 21 now. Take it with the obligatory pinch of salt, but I heard from someone that he was in the players' lounge for the semi-final second leg. He could've just been taking in a game. He could, however, be a prospective B Team signing. No idea what he's like now - he ...

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread

On the Norwich theme, Placheta was released by Swans. Lad would tear League One to bits, fitness allowing. I noticed his name last week and thought of you. But at that point I thought we might be a Champo team in for him  Can we get Danny Batth to fcuk up my auto-correct? :-) He's the lad that...

Regan Riley released by Norwich. 21 now. Also released by them, while I'm here: Ben Gibson, Dimitris Giannoulis, Sam McCallum, Danny Batth and Jon McCracken. Non-Regan releasees from the Canaries Academy (whence Nelson Khumbeni came, if memory serves): Marcel McIntosh, Dubem Eze, Michael Reindorf, F...

Re: Contract expiry

Am I correct that we are required to produce our retained list this week? Good question. I've seen it written that we have four days (ie tomorrow) but I can't confirm and the EFL rulebook is impenetrable on the matter. EDIT bit more digging, seeing "four days" a bit more for playoff teams, and it m...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Been thinking and researching. I totally agree that the “121 goals” or whatever it was - while lovely - can be a misnomer. I’ve long separated league games from cup games (often vs poor teams or with much altered line-ups). Even so, we still scored the second most in the league. But… I’m also very m...

Pompey didn't hire Ainsworth, they hired an unproven manager in his 30s

You can flick Evatt and get perfectly decent football

if you hire Ainsworth, you get hoofball

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

"How many times have we said...?" - after just about every loss, in some cases... As for the faith in the potential of Evatt to change - probably the fact he's fundamentally changed his formation three times in five seasons (including at Barrow) and also carried out remedial work on numero...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Ainsworth's lost two play-off finals, in which the only goal his teams scored was an oggie. (To be fair, he's also won one.) He was sacked this season after losing six games on the bounce. So yeah, he knows about failure. So do even great managers. Again, under Allardyce - who history proved to be a...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?

Nice post, AT. You speak for me, too. On the other point (replacement) - I understand why people say "It's not up to me to name a name" but the point is, to believe in change I need to see the alternative and to believe in it. For me, Gareth Ainsworth is very much a no thanks - partly on style, part...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm

I am somewhat concerned that the positioning of the 8's was part of the plan, which would have taken some mighty brave out-balls to find them under the circumstances. Whilst not thinking Ric covered himself in glory, the movement in front of him was awful. Absolutely agreed. If it was the plan, it ...
