Patriotism;Nationalism;Jingoism: There are so many grey areas that, at least linguistically, they can seem to overlap - at least in the English language they can. I cannot speak for other languages as I am not multilingual (unless talking fair dinkum, true blue Strine counts). Protection of one's o...

as i said at the very beginning, the only thing i can see myself doing at the moment after uni, is journalism, so what do people think of my original post as an article. obviously it has sparked a lengthy and varied debate which i'm guessing would be a good thing. however i'm not sure what i would ...

As a journalist you should find the shift key, J. Alfred. Thanks for giving your frank views, SOTWA. I would agree there are many motivations and there is likely a difference in motivations between the professional career soldier and those who volunteered in the two world wars. As noted I am...

You can call me Monty, Prufrock, whether or not we agree on issues. I did agree with you that a country was more than simply land and was a way of life within a defined territory. No one on TW would have much sympathy with a BNP Bolton supporter, indeed people have been banned for uttering racist v...

You are trying to suggest that Black voters vote for him because he is black. Don't try and deny that. :conf: Well they do! Just as some white voters will vote for the white candidate. We may think it is reprehensible that in the year 2008 that racism in civilised society still exits - but unfortun...

also when people say the soldiers were literally fighting for the LAND of britain, as in 'did those feet in ancient times' are people honestly saying that soldiers were fighting literally for the farm of some bloke from Leeds, or Newquay he'd never met, more than for the qualities of freedom and equ...

Re: Political Ramblings of an Idiot
I still feel things are somewhat misinterpreted. Yes, they would say they fought for their country but their country represents far more than a piece of land. It is culture, ideals, family, friends - a whole way of life which they would defend as well as just territory. My father, who was exempted ...

Re: Political Ramblings of an Idiot
regarding what i thought they fought for, whilst obviously some men fought for Queen and Country, by fighting for queen and country they were fighting for the ideals they represent, which i would argue as freedom and equality. they werent strictly speaking fighting to protect Britain as a landmass ...

Re: Political Ramblings of an Idiot
i have been accused before of being disrespectful to the people who fought and died in world wars to save britain, but my point is they didnt fight to save a piece of land in between John O'Groats and Land's End, but these ideals of freedom and equality. You're probably well wide of the mark there....

Re: Political Ramblings of an Idiot
some were frankly ridiculous, for instance the BNP who had a girl born and bred in Dublin quoted as supporting them, saying she beleived that Britain should be preserved for the indigenous people of Britain. that's right, the BRITISH national party. I'm not really sure what your point is there pru?...

agreed Worthy. i personally think it was immensely arrogant of ourselves and America to just decide they were having democracy, it sounds like an Oscar Wilde-ism ' the Iraqi people are having democracy whether they like it or not!'. now whilst, again in an ideal world, everywhere would be democratic...
the lyrics under my messages (is it called my signature?) pretty much sum up my feelings on left wingpolitics at the moment
the next line is 'so i hung up my banner in disgust and i head for the door' but it wouldnt fit. People complain and whine but nobody actually does an...

Dont worry you'll grow out if it. Nobody comes up with a post like that unless they are avoiding exam revision - am I right?! What course are you studying? Note the time of the post Mummy. I have just been struck by a strange thought. Has anybody else heard of Alfred J. Quack? it was a kid's cartoon about a duck living in a clog i used to watch when i was little. i am now wondering whether this two is a Prufrock inspired name, any thoughts? all i could find out (SERIOUSLY bored and pr...

Political Ramblings of an Idiot
A warning before i start, i am a student who has no idea what i want to do when i graduate. at the moment my ambitions are gravitating towards being a writer. my interests are music, football, philosophy and politics, probably in that order. this is an article about my political views and is quite l...
