It seems to me you raise taxes to increase government spending on things like social programs. You lower taxes to encourage private investmen...

I think any comparison with Pinochet's Chile is simply foolish rhetoric. I disagree with this (I would, wouldn't I!). They were both heavily influenced by the same economist (who's name escapes me at the moment - no it doesn't, Milton Firedman and the Chicago Boys!). He believed in the free market ...

Without getting too deeply into this, one of thereasons quoted as MT's greatest sins is that we got an awful lot of money from North Sea Oil and she blew most of it on the war with Argentina. Thought someone might have mentioned it since it had such a bitter reaction from a lot of quarters. I menti...

Monty, the fact that the Falklands earth is rich in mineral is both public and common knowledge. Add to that, that British expats were resident to the Falklands was surely enough reason for a the decisions to be forced. Not to mention that the fact the Argentinean’s made such a public "fxck you wer...

Who was it that let him into the country being my point! Thatcher stood by Pinochet (a despicable man) when Spain (a communist lawyer) was trying to extradite him. I think you will find this was payback for unpublicised support during the Falklands War (which I don't think had much to do with urani...

I think any comparison with Pinochet's Chile is simply foolish rhetoric. Economic restructuring will always cause some pain but if it leads to a greater prosperity then the short-term pain may be worth it. In Canada we went through much the same sort of thing at the same time. As trade barriers brok...

I didn't understand the decision then and I've still never figured it out.Batman wrote:Nowhere near as good as Pele in his first World Cup against Sweden when he was about 17

Funny - I heard a version this joke forty years ago, Bruce, when I first came to this country. It was in the deep south and the groom had no toes or knees as he undressed. The diseases were different. He had ptomaine poisoning and his toes fell off, and kneemonia and his knees fell off. The Bride's ...
