Hello from Pilates56

Post by Zulus Thousand of em » Thu Dec 02, 2010 6:08 pm

New member Pilates56 first saw Bolton play two years before I was born - now that's old! Please make him welcome.

I was brought up in Aspull, but have lived in Suffolk on and off since 1975.
My first Wanderers match was on Christmas Day 1952. We played Arsenal and lost 6-4. I can still remember as an 8 year old, catching the bus at 12.15pm at the Finger Post in Aspull with my Dad. I can't remember anything about the game but the score. We sat in the wing stand on Manchester Rd. A local fruit wholesaler from Blackrod, called Jimmy Oldcroft who had a retail round in Aspull was sat near us. He gave us a lift home in his car after the game. I think that was probably the first time I had ridden in a car!

This match is linked to the last game at Burnden by a lovely symmetry. Through Ian Rioch, Bruces' brother who I was involved with in some business at the time, I got 2 tickets for my son and I. Blow me if they were not also in the wing-stand on Manchester Rd. The only time I had sat in this stand since 1952. What a night of mixed feelings that was with the win, the stylish play, the promotion but goodbye Burnden.

Welcome. It is not, by the way, necessary to run your posts by the official censor and have him submit them (though it might avoid a banning order I suppose). I was also 8 in 1952 btw but did not see a match until 1953.

This comment is quite obnoxious and misleading. I demand that a mod censure the poster.

Welcome, Pilates, like Monty and yourself I attended my first (and only) Trotters game at Burnden at about the same time. We were hosting that other Wanderers, Wolverhampton. I stood on the terraces with the embankment leftish from my vantage point. It's funny what memory does over the years; I can remember but little of the game - little cameo mind pictures - but I recall clearly a goods train stopping and the crew with their heads out of the cab watching the game. :D

Not sure about this one - a ban may ensue. :D

He posted it in the wrong thread - and I've not figured out how to move a single post on this new site yet! :help:
