Aussie A League bloopers and general c*ntishness
fifteen minutes worth. Hilarious AND tragic, like all great works of art.

Lads who can't play football in Australia, play football.

Wasn't there a book about footy in Australia in the 1970's called "Puffs, wogs n Sheilas"? According to the enlightened Aussie male these were the only folk who played the game.Jakerbeef wrote:Lads who can't play football in Australia, play football.

Shielas, Wogs and Poofters by the late Great Johnny Warren. Cracking read.

Re: Aussie A League bloopers and general c*ntishness
There most certainly was, Hal. It was the late Johnny Warren's autobiography (well, the title of it). The title says it all when it comes to the public's perception of the game in those days. To many it hasn't changed all that much, which might account for the low standard of the game here, although over all the game does have a much higher 'profile' than it did then. Rugby League, Rugby Union and Australian Rules still rule the roost when it comes to popularity and press coverage. I think though that I read a year or two ago that football (soccer here) has more participation at the grass roots level than any of the other three codes. Whilst the skill level has indeed increased it hasn't translated into Australia's national team becoming anything more than an also-ran on the world stage.
As a matter of little interest to most of you: Soccer is played in summer here. Can you imagine banging around the pitch for 90 minutes in searing heat? Apparently this 'brilliant' strategy was to avoid the other three 'footy' codes being in direct competition. So with whom or what do they now compete? Cricket that's what. Cricket, the summer game of choice ingrained into every Australian's cerebellum as the sound of summer; the game to be enjoyed either at the ground or lazing away in the back yard with a 'trannie' whilst half listening to the drone of commentators describing seagulls and streakers in the same desultory tones as one might describe the drying of paint. It's hot, it's soporific it's, well, relaxing.
There's a long way to go.

The games aren't played at midday, Dujon.
There isn't a hope of getting any coverage during winter, the AFL and NRL get insane coverage (on and off the field) and glorious sunny afternoons and football go a treat.

I went watching Sydney last season and they brought Hayden Foxe on as a striker.
Enough said.

You are quite right, Horza, but neither is midday the hottest part of the vast majority of days. As a general rule that is reserved for the period between 1500 and 1700.Horza wrote:The games aren't played at midday, Dujon. . . .

...which has no bearing on anything but the odd Sunday game, as most fixtures kick off at 7-8pm
