Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate says he will be fit in time for the start of next season despite having an operation on his knee.

The 27-year-old will miss England's games against Brazil and Estonia to have the exploratory operation.

But he told BBC Sport: "It's nothing serious and I've no doubts I'll be fine for the start of next season.

"It started during the Sheffield United home game on New Year's Day and has been troubling me since then."

He added: "I'll have the operation on Monday when the season's finished, but it's only a minor one, nothing to worry about."

Woodgate will play against Fulham in Boro's last match of the season on Sunday but will not be fit to feature for England.

Manager Gareth Southgate said: "He has had a niggle for the last couple of months, so they are going to take at look at it.

"We will have a clearer picture of what the problem is after Monday."

I'll start the betting at, ooh, say 6mths out at least

I saw this early and had a chuckle. Doesn't sound promising does it. What a crock!

And they paid £7 million for him. It shows that hope springs eternal (see: Owen, Michael and Fortune, Quinton). Somebody is always going to give you a chance no matter how crippled you are.

Didn't Owens two most serious injuries both come while he's been at Newcastle?

I think you could count 'playing for Newcastle' as one

Broke his wrist and tore all the ligaments in both hands by any chance?

Mere detail

Not to be allowed to prevent cheap point scoring

I'd actually argue his most serious injury was while at Liverpool as it happens, because it took so much from his game

Still a cracking player when Newcastle got him though

I agree, because of him hamstring and muscle troubles he tried to bulk up, took a yard off him, but he's still class

Hmmm I didn't think of it that way, to be fair though it sounds as though the club knew, but if they did, they still risked his long term health by risking him, probably with injections ala Paul McGrath / Maradona
