Real Madrid sack Capello

Real Madrid have sacked coach Fabio Capello, 11 days after the Italian led the Spanish giants to their first league title since 2003. Pretty harsh considering the title's theres, tactics aside - sure we wouldnt sack Sammy Lee if he won the prem with big sam tactics.

We haven't got our head up our arse, and we hadn't offered the job to Bernd Schuster three months ago.

Madrid did precisely the same to title-winning Capello in 1987, and Del Bosque in about 2002 or so. Poor old Jupp Heynckes was given the boot after winning their first Champions League in 30 years!!

why anyone would want to manage them is beyond me. pretty much doesn't matter what you do, its basically a popularity contest for re-election and whoever is in vogue will get brought in for a year or 2 and then fired

Depends on balance. Rijkaard's already on shaky ground and leaving out one of Dinho/Henry/Eto'o/Messi - as he surely must if they're not to be swamped in midfield - will look like a mistake after every loss. But on the other hand, Schuster (probably) will have to balance half of Capello's (defensive) signings with a glory purchase or two, while assuaging the egos of ageing legends like Raul. Interesting times ahead, particularly if Sevilla keep up and Valencia step up.

The best thing the next manager could do would be to let Raul go. He's like the Alan Shearer of Madrid! Nowhere near the player he was, but still thinks he owns the club.

The again, those mentalists in the stands wouldn't stand for it!

In truth he was lucky to last this long. Unpopular defensive football, signings that often didn't work (Horseface apart), sending the popular Becks to Coventry... his (cliche alert) Italian-style "winning football" eventually triumphed as Barça fell apart and Sevilla tired massively, but there won't be floods of tears in the capital over Capello's decapitation.

His sacking was already decided halfway in the season, with reportedly manager and president clashing almost daily and Real supporters hating the team playstile. Problem is that Fabio ended winning the league, which made the decision not as easy as it looked 3 months ago.

It cements Real's reputation of sacking managers in very odd grounds anyway (remembers me of when they sacked Antic with a 10 point lead up the league because he played ugly football and we ended nicking the title)

Yes he has a big ego and a great influence given his past achievements and popularity amongst the fans. He's actually been quite troublesome these last seasons where he has been benched often due to his decadence.

He has a contract that states that he will always be the player with the highest wages at Real. Not sure you really want him

There was a rumour that Florentino Pérez was so fed up with him that tried to sell him, but nobody could afford such wages.
