Hull City Tigers - Roar, roar, roar.

Hull owner Assem Allam has confirmed the club will be formally renamed Hull City Tigers from the start of the new season.

The move, which runs the risk of stoking resentment among fans, will do away with the Association Football Club (AFC) moniker which has been part of the Yorkshire club's name since their formation in 1904.

Revealing the move in the Hull Daily Mail, Egyptian-born businessman Allam said: "Hull City is irrelevant.
"My dislike for the word 'City' is because it is common.
"City is also associated with Leicester, Bristol, Manchester and many other clubs.
"I don't like being like everyone else. I want the club to be special.

"It is about identity. City is a lousy identity. Hull City Association Football Club is so long."
Any references to AFC on club branding are to be phased out, although AFC will remain on the shirt crest during their first season back in the Barclays Premier League, before being removed from the 2014/15 campaign.
According to the Mail's report, Allam wants to market the club as Hull City Tigers locally and Hull Tigers to national and international audiences.

"In the commercial world, the shorter the name, the better. The more it can spread quickly," said Allam, who took over the Tigers in 2010 following their relegation from the top flight and whose investment is credited with saving the club from a significant financial crisis.

"I have always used short names in business. It gives you power in the science in marketing. The shorter, the more powerful the message," he said.
"In Tigers, we have a really strong brand."

He should have just cut to the chase and called them Tigers. Forget the AFC, aye, but also forget the Hull City too.

I will be starting a petition to rename Bolton Wanderers FC as Leopards.

Speaking of Tigers I went to a house today where the old dear had picture of Tigers all over her walls. In conversation it came up she didn't have a passport and I said i was surprised as I assumed with all the Tiger stuff she had, she'd have been keen on foreign travel to see them.

"No but I've always wanted to go to Africa"

Jesus, so of the three promoted clubs we've got Hull changing their name, Cardiff playing in red and Palace playing at the 12Bet.com Stadium.

Premier League summed up I suppose.

Surprised that Sky haven't insisted that all teams adopt this type of name as part of the latest deal. Bolton Trotters!

Seriously? From a commercial viewpoint why would a modern brand align itself with something as frankly jaded and old as Selhurst? Sure, it'll get many a media mention but by way of brand positioning I can't believe that an international business would touch it with a barge pole. :?

There's publicity and there's brand positioning.

SSN interviewing Hull's fans outside the ground. The resigned and weary acceptance of most of them was a good indicator of how far football's morals & traditions have slipped

Let's all go back and use the leather footballs.

Football might as well keep changing that's the only reason it will remain interesting. Hull City Tigers sounds better than Hull City AFC. The only time it really would bother me in terms of change would be if they decided to do another Wimbledon and change location like Milton Keynes.
