Great timing, only a single point but well worth the coin if it saves us at term end. Thanks TD. Better wish your missus happy Mother's Day from us lot.

Aye, they help to balance out offside decisions that get changed and cost us a goal...

Well. What a day for The Legendary Flanners. Wakes up at 2am in a German hotel, having covered a match/feature for FourFourTwo there the night "before". Into the taxi and off to the airport, hop to Stanstead, shuttle to Luton, gets picked up at the gate by this idiot you're listening to now. Off to Hillsborough. Why do we do this sort of thing? Because we're football fans, and at some level, under the cynicism, we believe in the game's unmatchable ability to give us transcendent moments of wonder and joy.
That said, even the biggest believer might not have named it as coming from Aaron Wilbraham. But that just made it the more laughably unbelievably wonderful when it happened.
After seven changes at Reading, just two here, both enforced. No surprise that Kirchhoff wasn't sharp enough for two games in a week, and no surprise that Ameobi returned. The winger replaced Morais, who would have an input later on. Big Jan was replaced by Derik, perhaps a surprising choice, especially if you're Jem Karacan. The Spaniard played reasonably in the first half but faded after the oranges. The Geordie Nigerian looked our best creative bet (creative used here as an adjective, if that's OK Bruce?).
But not our only option. Again, we had the better of the play against a nervy home team who looked deeply unimpressive considering they (like Reading) were 'fine margins' from the Premier League ten months ago. Their problems are their own concern, I care about my own team, and the 4231 looks to give us a decent balance of defence and attack.
Jon Flanagan is warming to his role, working well with whoever's in front of him - in this formation the wingers tend to switch sides frequently, and the personnel here was different to at the MadStad - and doing the defensive stuff well. There's a way to go yet but you wonder if Parky is already considering a Bosman in summer when the Scouser's LFC contract ends. For now, with a tough home game followed by a trip to Leeds, you imagine Little might be cooling his heels awhile.
Antonee Robinson might also have to wait behind Taylor on the left. The older fella isn't a threat coming forward but he makes the defence safer, a prime concern in a back four, and digs in like a leader even when things are going wrong for him (such as the second-half spell when he followed a fluffed volleyed clearance by falling flat on his face). A Parkinsonian warrior.
Interestingly, Burke and Beevers retained their places, with Wheater again out of the 18 (as was Vela). The centre-backs looked determined enough, with Burke's slightly larger propensity for making a mistake somewhat covered by his much larger ability to recover from it (when Beevers is beaten, he's beaten).
But the defence wasn't put under too much pressure. Wednesday were awful. Some of that is to our credit - we looked more threatening than them on the ball. With Henry doing his usual thing and Pratley reprising his "withdrawn target" role, it was the same plan as at Reading, and again it worked. Alf ran his socks off up top - when did he last play 180 minutes in five days?
Out wide, Ameobi was also his usual self - capable of brilliance followed by the sort of ineptitude that sees a shot go out for a throw-in. (The ball-boy in the corner rolled it back to the keeper for a goal kick: presumably he'd nodded off.) But Sammy was easily the most threatening player on the pitch.
Buckley. Hmm. My new question, delivered in childlike tone, is "What is a Will Buckley?" There's obviously a player in there somewhere but you never quite get the notion he knows what he's doing. At one point in the first half he picked the ball up and, in that oddly shambling gait of his, gradually burrowed diagonally inwards; attempting to slide the ball not 10 yards wide to Ameobi, who'd also cut inside into his shooting zone, Buckley produced a pass so terrible it started a counter-attack from which Wednesday could conceivably have scored. As at Reading, Buckley also made the effort to find himself with the ball at his feet for a presentable chance, but proved comically incapable of doing anything with it. I understand why Parky likes him - he certainly doesn't shirk - but he must surely be dropped when Morais is fit, if not before: can't Clough be given a chance in the same role?
Jordan Rhodes came on so obviously Wednesday scored; it wasn't strictly an assist - give that to the lino, who flagged the central Rhodes offside then unforgivably lowered his flag when Boyd finished. It wasn't just the Bilton bench that went mad at that - I still can't speak properly.
Parky was making a sub at that point. It may not have been the same one he made subsequently - Clough and Wilbraham for Flanagan and Derik, with Morais and Pratley dropping slightly deeper to do their duties (respectively, right-back and running around like a dog in boots). To my memory, Clough touched the ball once, to force a throw. I'm not sure Albi touched the ball many more times than the one that mattered, nodding home Morais's second assist in a week, to send the away end quite delirious. Few things in life are as good as a vital injury-time equaliser. To get one after feeling ripped off, and knowing that the majority of teams below you have missed yet another chance to catch up, was life-affirmingly wonderful. That's why we go. That's why we believe.

I really didn't think we were going to get anything from that game yesterday but the players dug in and worked so hard. When everybody booed when Wilbraham came on I was going mad at everybody round me!! I don't think hes very good, but I wouldnt boo him, and at the end when he scored he came straight to the crowd with everybody cheering him, and there were limbs everywhere going mad!! I just hope we stop booing our players, its cringeworthy
When we came out the ground we were stopped from going anywhere as they let the Wednesday fans go out first! What a stupid system that was....anyway enjoyed the game, no quality in it, but thought we deserved a point

I really like both the above posts (DSB & Twilight), thanks both for the affirmation: I love this club, it's family. Onwards!

... so we've had Alf and Wilbraham score in two games. Two players who Insano insists are crapper than shit masquerading as crap. And how many goals has the washing machine scored since he left for the land of plenty?
What, nil!? None, zip, fxck all.
Puts hand to ear and hears the plaintive wail of "where are the goals coming from?"

Gee, if only that bicycle kick effort of Alf's had gone in. Their goalie deserves a lot of credit for being in the right place. Cracking effort.Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Sun Mar 11, 2018 4:43 pm... so we've had Alf and Wilbraham score in two games. Two players who Insano insists are crapper than shit masquerading as crap. Think he'd been flagged offside TD. But yes, credit to both of them.TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Sun Mar 11, 2018 4:53 pmGee, if only that bicycle kick effort of Alf's had gone in. Their goalie deserves a lot of credit for being in the right place. Cracking effort.

I'm not sure flagging offside meant too much in that game... Great kick by Alf and the goalie was certainly in the right place though he might have regretted it for a moment. Even Alf stopped while play was going on to check if he was okay.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sun Mar 11, 2018 4:55 pmThink he'd been flagged offside TD. Even THAT set of clowns would adjudge Alf to be interfering there.

Heard from a good source, Wheater and Parky aren't seeing eye to eye.

Parky's the boss, no doubt, but Wheater, player of the years and all that, eight goals last season and never seems to give less than his all? Is Parky being a bit prematurue in thinning out the old trees? I make this a question because it seems a bit odd. Kirchoff is flaky, so it seems, and Burke is on loan; I'd have thought Wheater would be the mainstay in central defence?Athertonian wrote: ↑Sun Mar 11, 2018 9:36 pmHeard from a good source, Wheater and Parky aren't seeing eye to eye.

We're not scoring 1 a game. Whilst its good that Wilbraham scored, its still true that he's 38 and most certainly not very good anymore.Lost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Sun Mar 11, 2018 4:43 pm... so we've had Alf and Wilbraham score in two games. Its also true that the last two games were winnable if we could score more than one goal. Spirit is helping us dig out results, but come on, we'd be better off with a proper striker. No doubt about that.

Alf is a proper striker. If his bicycle kick effort hadn't been saved everybody would have been shouting "wonder goal". We also had a couple of creditable efforts well saved. The Owls, like us are fighting for their lives and, unlike us have at least had a few bob to spend. The reason we don't have much choice isn't hard to figure out. We don't have the luxury of buying. They can afford to leave Rhodes on the bench (pity they didn't) and, since we were playing away and were robbed of three pounts by bad officials, we can consider ourselves a bit unlucky to say the least. If there weren't other teams on the field with similar ideas to us, scoring would be easy.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Mon Mar 12, 2018 9:20 amWe're not scoring 1 a game.
