Went in 1993 and 2017. Hadn't changed. Great memories though. Love an old fashioned lower league ground.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 10:39 pmBurslem makes Bolton look like Vienna.LeverEnd wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 10:35 pmSounds quaint doesn't it? Went in ‘96. One of my earlier away haunts. It’s not lasted in my memory to be honest. Probably blanked it out!

Yeah, I went to Port Vale (even though that phrase makes no geographical sense) for the early-season League Cup game in August 92. I can’t remember anything about the ground or getting there but I remember a few players signing our flag and Rob Palmer, then of Granada and lately Sky’s la Liga commentator, doing a prematch piece to camera in the slip-on shoes he wore without socks.
Didn’t go back till That Game in 2017, by which time away fans were in a different stand (IIRC we had been over to the near right, as you looked from 2017’s end).

I remember when I was a kid we had a good bit of a runoff against Port Vale. About the same time a load of lads in town started supporting Blackburn, so it'll have been '92ish. I went on holiday to Scotland that year and went to a Celtic game and I remember having a really confusing conversation with a woman in a chip shop back home when I told her I'd been to Celtic and Port Vale and she told me those were not places.

In late February 1993 – Rioch's first season – we were in eighth place and 10 points behind second-placed Vale, themselves 10 parochially painful points behind Lou Macari's runaway leaders Stoke.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Fri Sep 11, 2020 1:23 pmI remember when I was a kid we had a good bit of a runoff against Port Vale. Vale collected a tidy 32 points in their next 15 games but we went WWWDWWWDDWWWLWWWWW to haul them in. The second-last W was at home to already-champions Stoke, on a beautiful midweek evening – my 19th birthday, as it happens. When Julian Darby – the local lad who had spent much of the last season being reviled by a significant slice of the fanbase as a stubborn Phil Neal refused to drop his woefully out-of-form midfielder - scored at the Embankment end, much of the away following celebrated just as hard as we did. On the same evening, Vale could only draw at drop-dodgers Exeter, and for the first time that season we were in the automatic promotion slot. Some ale got supped that night.
All we had to do then was hold our nerve and beat relegation-haunted Preston at home four days later... but that's another story.

My first away game, Port Vale (Oct 83). My mate and the 17 yr old I presented ourselves at the Piccadilly Station booking office and requested "Two return tickets to Port Vale please". Well, how were we supposed to know?!
It remains the only game of my life in which I've seen mounted coppers enter a stand to drive back baying idiots. Yes, a stand.
At work we have a fabrication plant in Burslem (or Burslum as we put on documents to them. Oh the japes ) which I have to visit from time to time. Neither the place nor its inhabitants have altered one iota.

Yeah up there with Hull as an eye opener. But what a day a couple of years ago. Nearly up there with the best.
Set me up for me best ever day of drinking in the pub watching the Peterborough game though.

Someone put me on to the not the top 20 podcast which I haven’t yet listened too fully but was a decent overview by a couple of lads who seem to know their stuff - https://open.spotify.com/episode/6kxiE0 ... anPFDHYIb8.
At about 47 mins in for us - fair summary I think - Doyle and sarcevic great signings but the rest are fairly average for this division - predict us in 8th and suggest Doyle might struggle here without service. It’s probably the most reasoned prediction I’ve seen/heard.

The lads at Not The Top 20 are great. They've been involved with the Quest EFL show a few times as well, I think. Always worth a listen.

A couple of conflicting stats from BWFC Stats Twitter. This is the lowest League position we've ever been in, which is a downer, but, the first time since Dec 2018, we've not occupied a relegation spot. Take your glass half full / half empty pick.
Re: Division Four, 2020-?
Noticed our league cup conquerors Bradford got spanked 5-0 at home by Lincoln. I don't subscribe to the 'concentrate on the league' school of thought, but I think I'm slightly grateful we got knocked out!

Aye, spotted that too....Don't think at this juncture a spanking would help much...

Re: Division Four, 2020-?
The latest lockdown measures, which could be for up to six months (or longer), must put a question mark against the season being completed, or, at least, being completed by every team that started it.
Some money might trickle down from the Prem or Rishi, but it's unlikely to be enough to sustain all the clubs in our league.
And, of course, there's always the possibility that games won't be allowed to go ahead for health reasons.
Discuss.

Wigan are lucky that they were allowed to start the season - it’s only the pandemic and other clubs struggles that has deflected attention from the fact that they seemingly have no hope of being bought out. They still might not be the first club to go!

Re: Division Four, 2020-?
In a week that's seen Macclesfield Town close their gates for the last time after 146 years, for the want of less than a week's worth of Gareth Bale's pay, I think I'll rest my hopes on someone coming up with a vaccine first instead.

Salford sack Graham Alexander, 233 days after his last league defeat
Paul Scholes in the caretaker coat, presumably until he realises the players aren't of the standard he's accustomed to and strops off again

I guess reality is a bitter pill to swallow as we have found out recently. So much for thinking that other teams in L2 will just part the Red Sea and allow you to do what you want because of money or brand reputation.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Mon Oct 12, 2020 1:21 pmSalford sack Graham Alexander, 233 days after his last league defeat
