Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm

Haven’t posted in ages. Life gets in the way. Last game was in the FA Cup in 2016. Streaming finally gets the odd game here and the highlights are helpful. Was able to watch the second leg and was really impressed with the support.

Going to be off work on Saturday and watching from home. Hopefully we’re all happy by the end of the day, but no matter what to those going enjoy the match and have a pint for those farther away.

I doubt anything will beat the 1977/78 season for me. I was young, had never seen Bolton in the top division, we'd just missed out the year before so very happy days - we'd have got 89 points that season under 3 points a win. There were a couple of games, we had more than 50,000 on.

I enjoyed that post Worthy but the pedant in me wouldn't let that error go unmentioned. Soz!

Which error HG? Fairly sure we had a couple of games at Burnden in the late 70's with more than 50k. Was thinking Arsenal and Everton, is my memory failing?

77 v Everton 50,400...that was one...looking for the other.

I thought you were referring specifically to season 77/78. Our biggest attendance, league or Cup, that year was the 34,000 that saw us clinch the title in a goalless draw with Fulham. Given how small the away following was, that's probably the greatest number of Bolton supporters in a stadium since the Burnden disaster. We ran it close with the PJ Trophy last year.

Only once did we break through the 50,000 barrier in the 70s and yes, that was Everton for the league cup. Just once did we surpass 40,000 in the league (Sunderland 1975) Utd, City and Liverpool in the league were all healthy 30,000 + crowds but obviously included a high number of away supporters.

It was an "estimate."

I was in the Fulham bit of Embankment for that game...managed to get shifted at HT to the paddock, which was my normal spot, how no one died from crushing on the Everton match is still a mystery.

Coulda sworn we had a truckload on for an Arsenal game, but musta been mistaken...

I’m nervous but determined to go and enjoy the day. I really hope everyone else on here who is going enjoys it as do those who aren’t.

I’m not ashamed to admit the last few months have been personally very tough for family reasons I won’t go into and it’s taken a big toll on me personally.

Whatever happens Saturday doesn’t fix that or make it worse. It’s a game of football. I desperately want us to win - don’t get me wrong. I will be gutted if we don’t.

But I want to enjoy the day. Who knows how many more of these we will get? You never know.

You're not wrong Insane. I mentioned on here before, how we lost my brother in law a few days after the Crawley promotion win. He, his lads and extended family all big Wanderers fans. Hearing of his terminal diagnosis and watching him deteriorate slowly, the last thing that should have mattered was the outcome of a division 4 football match but it did matter. To him and to all of us.

We're all here on loan. Some longer than others. Whatever the outcome, days like Saturday will live long in the memory. Let's hope its for all the right reasons.

Great to read the Bruce Rioch's good wishes and memories article in the B.N. Will there ever be a better fight back game ever then the Reading one? A penalty save from Keith Branagan took us from 2-0 down to that incredible 4-3 win. Thoughts of it still
give minor electric shocks to the system. That's why we watch football.

We will, obviously, be tracing precisely the same transport route we did for the Pizza Cup final, and indeed sitting in very similar seats (they were level with 18-yard line, opposite side to the benches).
