There have been duller c*nts in the commentary box. His former Forest friend Trevor Francis, for instance, spent a droning decade saying nowt much. Birtles shares Tricky Trev's irritation with underperformance, but his perpetual high-eyebrowed "I can't believe how bad he is" schtick is at least of short-term interest, and he rarely gets games high-profile enough to see for anything longer than ten minutes.

Usual rule, though: if you've played football you're judged to be good at talking about it. I'm surprised they don't have horses commenting on the steeplechase.

I can't remember him being a 'cultured' striker when he played. Not particularly good or prolific and wasn't a great passer.

Right decision of course but I'm not optimistic about that shoulder. I feared last season that he's too fragile and will have an injury record like mark davies. Better than Sean Davies I suppose!
