Any guesstimates as to what kind of fee we might get for that?

Meh, we'd have Holden back by then. Would he get a game?

Do Suprs have any spare fullbacks?

Holden won't play again this season in all likelihood. If we're lucky he might be back for last 4 or 5 games, but unlikely!

On that basis, ermm I think we'll have Modric!

today the angle seems to be this:

Cahill to Spurs - because Spurs will be offloading Bassong to QPR...

or alternatively...
Bolton’s highly sought-after defender Gary Cahill is set to be the subject of numerous pre-contract offers from the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus, with the Italian clubs using a legal head start to gain an advantage over their Premier League rivals.

Cahill has attracted a great deal of attention with a series of top quality performances that have established him as a genuine first team member of England’s international setup.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea have all been desperately trying to open negotiations with Bolton over a potential move for the defensive star, whilst Arsenal had a bid immediately dismissed during the summer transfer window.

What's a legal head-start? Can I have one?

8) I think it means that foreign clubs can make pre-contract agreements earlier than British Clubs? I am hazy as to the details though...

I'd love it if he went to Barca or AC or somewhere. Equally, I'd be heartbroken if he settled for somewhere second rate like Liverpool or Spurs.

mercenary git that I am - I'd prefer him to go to the highest bidder - when he's gone, he's not ours anymore and I don't really care...

I've a feeling we'll get nowt for him. Hence I'd like a moral victory.

In the last six months. English (English, like in law, and cricket, meaning Wales as well, tehe) clubs, not British clubs, can only do so in the last month. I think.

how does this pre-contract thing work?

is it...

he signs a pre-contract with jonny-foreigner club and then he goes to them for free next summer?

or -

he signs one with them NOW - and they buy him in January?

or -

summat else!

The first I think.

I know there are different rules for English clubs, I've a feeling that you can't (legally) sign a precontract in the same country. As evidenced by the D-Prats incident, it could end up being the worst kept secret in football.

What I'd really love is for it to be announced in January that he'll be signing for Barca and quoted "sign for Swiss Tony or Yesterday's Man? Get. To. F*ck. I'm going where the sun keeps shining, through the pouring rain....".

He can sign for Johnny Foreigner in January, to go next summer.

With you on the 'get the most pennies' for him. If he is going for free would be nice to see him go somewhere big abroad. Barca would be ace, if only to point out to West Ham fans that in the 'how many of your lot have gone on to play for Barcelona' we'd be 2-0 up.

in that case - I'd rather we went for a cash deal with a Premiership club - and generated a competitive bidding war.... If we CAN get cash for him - (and if we make a judgement that the amount we'd get is worth more than having him until the end of the season - and let's face it - his presence in the current team is NOT currently stopping us losing!) - then I think we have to take it and use it to buy some plywood and nails to barricade the goal...

He will be free next summer though, so the chances of a bidding war, for me, are negligible. That a foreign club can appproach him and offer him a contract without having to sign him puts them in the box seat. If he wishes to play abroad, because they can save any fee and put it in wages.

We have no control over any of this, by the way.

no - we don't - not really... but maybe he doesn't want to move abroad and learn a new language etc...
