Players We Should've Kept For At Least Another Season

Post by Mar » Wed Jun 22, 2011 8:30 pm

So this thread is to highlight the players that we've got rid of that would've been a valuable addition should we have kept them another season.

Who would you have kept and why? (This includes past seasons). It has to be players that we could've kept hold of, not ones that wanted to leave or had to leave. SO basically players on a free or players who wanted to sign a new contract.

This years contenders are obviously Ricardo Gardner and Tamir Cohen for me. Johan Elmander stands out as a contestant but I think he had his heart set on elsewhere and it would've been this cloud hanging over our head, better to move on and find a striker all the fans and players can get behind (Sturridge perhaps?).

If you need reminding here's a list: http://www.boltonwanderers-mad.co.uk/fe ... ndex.shtml

2010/11: Gardner and Cohen
2009/10:
2008/09: Campo, Andranik
2007/08: Michalik
2006/07: Okocha, N'Gotty
2005/06: Candela
2004/05: Donovan Ricketts (we had Poole in goal at the time :S), Djorkaeff
2003/04: Derek Niven, Jermaine Johnson

Any players you would've liked to have seen stay had we given them more opportunity?

I always felt we could have got another season's good service out of Stelios, I really liked him and its a shame we didnt get much of a farewell for him.

For me, there isn't one single player on that list that wasn't released at exactly the right time.

2010/11: Gardner and Cohen ..... Gardner is staying and Cohen is not , never was & never will be good enough
2009/10:
2008/09: Campo, Andranik .... Campo, bless him, was about as mobile as a very immobile thing in the end. Adranik proved conclusively the following year that he wasn;t good enough (see Cohen)
2007/08: Michalik ..... dropped 2 divisions and last year was a benchwarmer at Carlisle if my memory serves.
2006/07: Okocha, N'Gotty ..... I thought JJ chose to leave. Bruno, maybe, just maybe had one more season in the tank
2005/06: Candela .... wanted to return to Rome where his wife & kids were & would not leave.
2004/05: Donovan Ricketts (we had Poole in goal at the time :S), Djorkaeff .... Ricketts ? Well better than Poole, but never going to dislodge Jussi. Djorkaev, sloped off in a strop after trying to engineer a move elsewhere. Great player, but what did he ever do after here ? Certainly did little at Ewok.
2003/04: Derek Niven, Jermaine Johnson .... you're right. Both these promising players have cut fine 3rd Division careers since leaving us.

Sheesh Mar. That was some list.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I think Michalik won the JPT this season to be fair!

Then I withdraw. His excellent Div 3 performances should not go un-recognised.

Some left for various reasons, some we moved on. As a whole if it were possible:
Campo, Stellios,Candela, Bergson and Hierro all would have been nice.

I think of that list the only player who would have been worthwhile keeping was Candela. A proper player. But his family were in Italy and didn't fancy the move to Bolton. Not sure there is anyone else who we "should have kept". And not even sure Candela falls into that category as we tried to keep him but it was not possible.

I think we let all go at the right time, which the exception of Candela who left by his own choice.

Jonathan Walters. Pretty much the only player deemed to poor for Bolton who's actually carved out something that resembles a career later on.
