Lawro's thoughts on Bolton

Owen Coyle is facing major problems at Bolton – and if they go down it could put the whole club’s future in doubt.

Why on earth is no-one talking about Bolton’s £110million debt? People watched Portsmouth unravel and they’re fighting for their very existence.

Surely it could be just as bad, if not worse, for Bolton. It will be one hell of a struggle to stay up because, compared to last season, they have lost Daniel ­Sturridge, Johan Elmander and the injured Stuart Holden.

Veteran Kevin Davies has been terrific but his powers are waning. Coyle has lost so much attacking talent – and replaced them with David Ngog.

Jussi Jaaskelainen has been one of the most ­consistent keepers but even he can’t go on forever.

If the owners were to lose interest, then who could they sell to recoup £15m or £20m? They can’t even flog Gary Cahill for a big amount anymore.

They turned down big money in the summer and will take a big hit on him in January. They’ll receive around £7m for their star man, which isn’t much, and he’ll be replaced by David Wheater and Zat Knight.

Bolton will do well to survive. And if they drop, they’re heading one way.

Gary Cahill is set to go to Chelsea in January.

But I’m not sure if he will be able to cope at the highest level in the Champions League­­­­­­­­­ and at a top-four team.

Just look at Yakubu’s goal for Blackburn against Bolton the other night to see proof of that.

Portsmouth was owned by 4 different owners for that last season so that's probably not a good example.

Newcastle is maybe a similar case, Mike Ashley did (and is still doing) have to sell and recoup funds... and was relegated.

Was in the pub the other day and a Wrexham supporter was saying about the trouble Wigan would be in without Dave Whelan. I think you look at Wigan and Bolton, then look at Blackburn.

If we get sold to the wrong people it's going to be grim. For every Sheik Mansour there's a Malcolm Glazer or Venkys.

Other than that, Cahill is a personal Lawro judgement but he's not talking complete rubbish generally.

i think he's right about Cahill tbf.

In a quality team i think Cahill will shine.The level of pressure will be less and the number of mistakes likewise.He has all the attributes to be exceptional. The one question mark is about focus but I think in the right surroundings he can improve this aspect of his game.

He might just be forgetting that people in Bolton are aware of it all and those outside don't give one. No startling revelations, just common knowlege. He must have just noticed we were propping the league up last week and decided to make an observation we could go down. Add a dose oh his usual half-arsed researched comments and you have vintage Lawro. Get that moustache ready, if you start growing it now it might appear by season end....

Much though I'd be delighted tall call him a tw@t, I think he's called that one about right.

Moonshift can call in most of the debt within one year I think. They probably won't, but let's face it most people have met Eddie Davies about the same number of times as they've played for Bolton - so it's a bit of a guess.
