Bit harsh to say he had his leg broken at the beginning of the year...a1 wrote:tyrone mears
a coyles's mate signing in the form of a player instead of a bib holder or whatever.
and i'm not even counting that he got knackered after about 3 minutes.
Also from a financial perspective him and Eagles only cost £3 million combined and probably aren't on massive wages so hardly a disaster on a Sean Davis scale.
Most disappointing signing for me is still Elmander, could have been the dawning of a new age if he'd have gotten any way near the form of the man he was brought in to replace. I still wonder how much it works out we payed for each of his 18 goals? Anyone have a idea what he was earning per week? Shudder to think really..
edit: a quick gander on wikipedia shows he got 12 goals for Galatasaray this year alone and helped win them the title, brilliant return on a bosman.

He came on against Chelsea the day we went down and had a great chance. All he needed to do was make contact with the ball with his head and we'd have been 1-1 and stayed up. Chelsea went up the other end and killed the game off.Gary the Enfield wrote:Gaetano Giallanza
Now on trial with Brighton, so we may yet see him. I was going to say again but apart from riding the pine once against Charlton I don't remember him getting in the squad.
He's 37. I can't see how he's on trial with Brighton. He played for us in 1998!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, Allardyce signed Cid, Michalik and Samuel and alledgedly (well according to just about everyone including Sammy Lee and Gartside) did the deal for McCann before he left.
If we're judging on "worst player" then Cid has to be up there.
If we're looking at "worst value for money" then Todds 3.5M spent on Holdsworth ranks up there for me. Bought to score the goals to keep us up and he was bobbins. Yes he performed well once Allardyce came in 3 years later but hardly the point. Record signing at the time, and a BIG mistake.

Dean Holdsworth Plus: He scored the winner against Liverpool to send us top of the Premier League
Dean Holdsworth minus: Wembley. That miss. The c*nt.

I have to say I liked Lubo Michalik. Worst signing for me is Ibrahim Ba. Was a free transfer unless I'm mistaken? What a rip off!

That sitter Ba missed in the draw with Man Yoo at the Reebok right at the death! Grrrr

Was gonna say Pierre Yves-Andre but he played in the West Ham game so he's reet.

Wasn't he on the end of the Ian Pearce tackle that resulted in the red?Verbal wrote:Was gonna say Pierre Yves-Andre but he played in the West Ham game so he's reet.

Can't believe nobody had pointed out that we never conceded with Fortune on the pitch . . . He doesn't deserve to be here!

Can't look past Danny "10 appearances" Shittu and Sean "f*cking 3??" Davis. Admittedly, as DLH as pointed out, Davis could have been a good signing, but he wasn't, and Shittu never was. 13 appearances for an outlay IRO of £10m smashes all of those silly Allardyce gambles out of town because of the long lucrative contracts offered.
Makes Tyrone Mears look like a sunday school attempt.

Shittu cost £2M. He signed a 3 year deal and was on £20K a week (having been unable to agree that with Rangers).Lord Kangana wrote:Can't look past Danny "10 appearances" Shittu and Sean "f*cking 3??" So his cost was closer to £5M.

So more than £10m then. Forgive me for cutting Megson some slack.

Sorry misread your post thought you were claiming Shittu was £10M alone.Lord Kangana wrote:So more than £10m then. Forgive me for cutting Megson some slack.
I don't think I'd criticise the signing of Davis. Good player. Would have made a massive difference to us that season, had he not picked up an injury. Unlucky more than owt else.
Shittu was poor business though, agreed.

Yes, I thought I had dreamt that one as no one else mentioned him. Puygrenier or similar spelling.TANGODANCER wrote:Sir Peregrin of the Greensward, Pelegrino Peregrono or something or other. Big lump of a defender..French?
Injuries can't really count as bad signings, rather unfortunate ones.

Plus that great lump we signed from Portugal to play up front ... no, NOT Vaz Te .... the one who for a short while then went scoring crazy in Turkey.
But surely, Shirley the winner is the geezer Sam signed from the Spanish 23rd division who never even saw daylight. If anyone ever turned up with a brown-paper bag under his arm it was him.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Aye, right in front of us that.

Re: Worst signing by Allardyce, Lee, Megson or Coyle?
I doubt he cost us a great deal though. The OP (see what I did there kids) is about the sheer cost of Sean Davies. I doubt he's even in the top 10. Still shit, granted, but he's not Champions League shit. More, er. second division, if you will.
