Players you wished we'd kept
Over the years who are the players you wish we had hung onto or kept for longer?
A couple stand out for me recently in Ali Al Habsi & Bernard Mendy who I thought was developing into a real threat just as his year was up.
Going back though, does anyone remember Martin Pike? Signed on loan as a left back which allowed Cowdrill to push into midfield we had a great Xmas period but Phil Neal wouldn't break the wage structure at the time and he was allowed to leave (along with our automatic promotion hopes).
Worthington leaving early in the 79/80 season seemed to put paid to our hopes of staying up that year and the long decline that followed.

Very recently, Gary Cahill, no chance saying we went down but if we stayed up it would have been great to watch him for another season
Re: Players you wished we'd kept
I've always thought it a shame that we couldn't persuade Vincent Candela to sign a permanent deal.

Being one goal away from staying up does make you wonder...... argh what's the point.Relentless09 wrote:Very recently, Gary Cahill, no chance saying we went down but if we stayed up it would have been great to watch him for another season

I remember him, he was very good at the level that we were at then.Harry Genshaw wrote:Over the years who are the players you wish we had hung onto or kept for longer?

I think that Fulham signed him, being impressed during one of his loan games against them.

Blerim Dzemaili is doing pretty well for himself

In all seriousness he looked like one helluva player...where did it all go wrong?
Going back...Florent Laville if he hadn't of been injured...Gudjohnsen for another few years would of ben nice...how about Mad Arnie Gunnlaugsson and Sasa Curcic?

Although it wasn't ever really in our hands (in fact didn't we try offer him a extension?) I always feel Fernando Hierro we hardly knew ye.
Re: Players you wished we'd kept
Anelka & Gudjohnson for me.. was gutted when they both left.
Re: Players you wished we'd kept
I remember Martin Pike, thought he looked good as well.
Recently though would have to say Curcic, Gudjohnsen and The Elk would be three off the top of my head

He may have stopped a goal earlier on in the season and it may not have been necessary for a win a Stoke . . . . I didn't even know we'd ever had him. I've seen him a few times for Napoli and he looks like a really talented player. Definitely one we missed out on.thevza wrote:Blerim Dzemaili is doing pretty well for himself

Re: Players you wished we'd kept
I always thought Martin Pike came on loan *from* Fulham, but apparently not - he went there (from Sheffield United) instead of here and played 200 league games for them. Can still recall him cupping his ear to the Paddock singing "sign him up".
Can't agree with the desire to keep AAH, unless it's money no object: bloke wasn't happy being back-up, and we got decent wedge for him. Mind, I'd rather have kept him than Bernard Mendy, who was a greyhound of a footballer - fast, tiny brain, ran round in circles. Hardly immolated the globe since...

Matt Clarke (We couldn't afford the £1 million transfer fee) and Chris Fairclough, player of the year and then released, I never understood why??

Didn't I read he had knee knack and we couldn't justify the fee. Six months later his knee knack got worse?
I think we dodge a bullet with him.
