Dear God! One of the last things I'd want to be anywhere near would be a Burnden toilet.

Wow. I've just found this by accident - I didn't even know that footage of the game existed. Wanderers 0 Wolves 1 from May 77, a loss that meant we missed promotion by one place for the second consecutive season. A 10 years old me was in The Lever End, shitting myself as their ner do wells invaded the pitch and started lobbing the St John's benches at us. I remember walking up The Manny Rd after the game in complete silence. As the footage attests, we absolutely gubbed them an' all. :(

How was our goal offside?!

And was their freekick routine really all deliberate?

Ouch, that hurt.

I was there, on the Burnden Paddock. That was a tough day. Saw the team out in Bolton later & they came into the Anchor, which we used, and Ian Greaves was uttely pissed. Kept referring to the Wolves manager, Sammy Chung as a "fckg yellow prick". I think he was upset.

I'd forgotten about the disallowed goal. It was offside in those days. We currently bemoan the odd interpretation of the offside rule with 1st & 2nd phases and was a player active etc., etc.

In those days anyone in an offside position who was anywhere ner the goal was deemed to be 'interfering with play'. The interpretation had become pretty extreme at this time. So, utterly wrong as it will be to our eyes, it wasn't out of scope at that time.

The free kick. It will have been deliberate as Willie Carr was always very inventive with his free kicks. However, it does look like he had to recover his kick as Hibbett moved the ball a little to the right. I'd forgotten how close Jim McDonagh came to saving it.

It was our fault that we weren't already promoted ... as it had been the year before, as we'd been the leagues best team but blew it toward the end.

35,600 on Burnden that day! Amazing games in those promotion chase years, an atmosphere that we get nowhere near these days, not even close. I was there for this one too, in the Lever End, I think, although possibly the Manny Road Paddock. Ian Greaves; RIP.

I was there too, missed a cousins wedding to go, totally p*ssed off, made amends at reception with a bridesmaid. Took my mind off it for a while. Sad memories, but we've had more sad than good. all part of being a wanderer.

It wasn't even the biggest attendance at Burnden that season either! We were actually one of the best supported teams in the country that season. We actually had bigger average attendances than half the teams in the top flight. In fact outside the top flight, only Chelsea had bigger average attendances than us.

Blimey! That took me back - never seen that footage. I was there that day amongst a good following from Bolton, me & a mate had travelled all the way down in a beat up old Escort. God knows how we made it there and back. Dark days indeed.

I take it it's treason to say I found Dave Higson's commentry to be rather embarrassing is it ?
