Used to love going in there as a kid before he moved to Astley Bridge (used to love going in there too, and Peacock's Sports further up on the other side). What was the place called at the back of the Nationwide? George Bell?

Aye, Back Cheapside? Got my first decent set of golf clubs there. There was also Harold Windetts and Albert Wards, both on Bradshawgate.Bruce Rioja wrote:Used to love going in there as a kid before he moved to Astley Bridge (used to love going in there too, and Peacock's Sports further up on the other side). I remember the name Harold Windetts but can't visualise the shop. Did Albert Wards end up downstairs in Whittikaer's?TANGODANCER wrote:Aye, Back Cheapside? Re: Trotters pics
Not sure about Wards in Whittakers, that seems likely as I have a vague memory of sports stuff in there ,but Harold Windett's shop was (I'm almost sure) next door to the Balmoral on Bradshawgate. He seemed to specialise more on shooting and fishing stuff, there were always air rifles and rods in his window. Memory's not what it was.Bruce Rioja wrote:I remember the name Harold Windetts but can't visualise the shop. Did Albert Wards end up downstairs in Whittikaer's?TANGODANCER wrote:Aye, Back Cheapside? Re: Trotters pics
Managed to dig out an old pic of Albert Wards. (Think that's a Bolton scarf in the middle of the window). My uncle was Manager of Fisher Raworth's tool store next door and they moved to Spa Road from there. Silverwell Street is at the crossing. (Think that's a Triumph Herald or Vittesse?) Note the latest in hi-tech glazing renovation parked at the kerb.

Albert Ward was a cricketer for Yorkshire and Lancashire before opening his sports store.

I remember seeing Gareth Williams coming out of there on the morning he played his first match for us - not sure of the year - about 1960?

Re: Trotters pics
Whilst the topic of goalies' is being discussed elsewhere on site, Bolton's own legendary net keeper, Eddie Hopkinson (R.I.P.) guarded the Bolton nets for seventeen years. In that time he turned out five hundred and nineteen times for Bolton, earned fourteen full international caps and six under-twenty-three caps. Eddie, as keepers' go today was pretty small at five-feet-ten, but in Wanderers lore, a veritable giant. Eusebio turned out to play in his testimonial.
Just thought it worthy of a mention. The pic is from 1965 with Eddie right at the back.

Oh wow. So will that have been at an early Burnden or at Pikes Lane?
EDIT: Ah, we were at Burnden between 1895 and 1997
