I can recall Alex Ferguson being on the brink of the sack until Mark Robins popped up and scored. It is possible for any Manager to get it wrong at a Club, without them becoming a "bad manager".
He did fine at Blackburn, he was building at City and had only lost two games when he got sacked (didn't win enough though, probably - his overall record there wasn't bad), he did fine at Fulham, took them up to 8th, then fooked up at QPR.
