By sounds of the article the players were out of contract so the clubs had no choice.

As they are youngsters we will have to pay mandatory compensation.
The one at Sheffield Wednesday had only just signed a contract...
There seems to be confusion over whether he actually signed it or not.....
He didn't sign it!

I do frequently.

But no, just confirming he was a free transfer.

Not free if he's a young 'un, but cheaper than if he'd just signed a contract.

It was at Sheffield Wednesday .... we ALL know they have no pens there.

C'mon ... keep up.

Yeah sorry a "free agent" whom we will have to pay some mandatory compensation for.

Cheaper as you say than if he'd been under contract.

In the final of the 1988 Football League Centenary Tournament, Wednesday lost the final to Forest for the want of a few pens.

Seems a perennial problem.

I wonder if they ever thought of signing Andreas Schäffer, or Scott Parker, or maybe even Marek Biro?

Though I think they could have done with Antônio José da Silva Filho.

some comments on him from a Wednesday forum when he was linked to united
" Definitely not that good. Fast as owt though. "

"He has indeed improved this season, but he's nowhere near first team level."

" He wansn't particularly good, just super quick. "

"I'm surprised as well because in addition to being a good player he is a great kid, down to earth and I honestly felt he would be a big one for the future "

Conor Wilkinson

There isn't many quotes on him that I found from millwall fans but I found a few videos of him scoring a beauty, Millwall fans tried to start a rumor of United trying to sign him just because he went to a united game :P

Probably just me but Hayden White looks abit like Muamba

Is that Rob Hall's contract up at the end of the season?

I'd be amazed ... he was here for 3 months, brought on for the very final game and hoicked off after 37 minutes. I did presume that would all be put down to experience.

On the other hand the Spam fans seem to rate him and view him as having real potential ... which while that mitigates against the above points, sort of makes you wonder why Allardyce would let him go.

Anyway, we'll see I guess.

It wasn't 3 months
I see this as a punt - hopefully a low cost one
And knowing Douglas, he's not signing some duffer with issues like Coyle did with McKee

Cost wise, this particular deal has a fee "of sorts" according to Nixon.
