Riga Mortis - Charlton Athletic (H) 19/04/16
With just 24 hours until the final whistle, I thought we ought to have a match thread for what is possibly our last chance of this season to avoid defeat. I'll stick my neck out: 1-1.

I saw the away game. Charlton were the worst team I've seen all season play us. We were 2-0 down after 25 minutes and still should have won.
4-0 them.
4-0 them.

I'm struggling to give a fcuk, TBH. A win for us would almost be taking the pi$$, so I reckon 1-0 to us.

Are Blackburn the only duffers who couldn't beat us this year? They couldn't even score against us for that matter
1-2 defeat. Dervite (is he still here?)

They could be joined by Charlton and Fulham yet.

A momentous occasion, a scintilating 3-0 win for the Superwhites, accompanied by Elvis being seen in the Lofthouse Lower wearing a catsuit based on our home strip.

Don't we need at least one more point to avoid being tied lowest points tally ever with Blackpool? A record like that really would be the cherry on the cake. If it's the last chance to avoid defeat we may have to win this one. I'm not sure we can hold out for a draw.

That "lowest points total ever" that's been mentioned is a bit misleading. Blackpool's 26 points might be the lowest points total for A Division Called The Championship (est. 2004) but plenty teams have had worse seasons than that: Stoke got 17 in 1984/85, Donny 20 in 97/98, Cambridge 21 in 84/85 (after 24 in 83/84 in the second tier – so worse than Blackpool and us), West Brom 24 in 85/86, Derby 24 in 90/91, Newport 25 in 87/88, Stockport 25 in 2009/10 (Stockport also had two 26pt seasons in 01/02 and 04/05 - tough decade). And that's just the 3pts-for-a-win seasons; cut the number of points available (or indeed the number of teams in the division) and there's been some much lower scores (hats off to the 8 points collected by Loughborough in 1899/1900 and Donny in 1904/05).Armchair Wanderer wrote:Don't we need at least one more point to avoid being tied lowest points tally ever with Blackpool? However, fear not, history-seekers! There's certainly a selection of "personal worsts" (club records) we might yet, erm, achieve. Current season score in brackets:
Fewest home wins in a season: 4, 2011–12. (4)
Fewest away wins in a season: 0, 1949–50, 1979–80. (0)
Fewest wins in a season: 5, 1979–80. (4)
Most home draws in a season: 11, 1979–80. (10)
Most home goals conceded in a season: 39, 2011–12. (26)
Most away losses in a season: 18, 1984–85. (17)
Most away goals conceded in a season: 59, 1932–33. (52)
Most draws in a season: 17, 1991–92. (14)
Most losses in a season: 25, 1970–71, 1995–96. (24)
Most goals conceded in a season: 92, 1932–33. (78)

Didn't realise that Charlton will be relegated unless they win tonight. I feel for their fans if they are: it's a bloody long way, especially on a Tuesday night, and it would be horrible for them to see the leering faces of the Scoreboard Corner.
Anyway, Jimmy's presser from yesterday:
Anyway, Jimmy's presser from yesterday:
I thought the players adapted to our game plan very well on Saturday. Emile Heskey did a good job for us. Ultimately though, Boro's investment in their strikeforce proved to be the difference on the day.
There are signs of the players showing more confidence and self belief. There is more to come from the players though. We're encouraging Zach Clough to read the game differently and working with Emile has helped him. Emile has been giving Kaiyne Woolery some help and passing on his experience which is great for him.
Both Zach Clough and Mark Davies got on the ball a lot more on Saturday - they can be a springboard for us in games. We are looking towards the future, but we still want to be putting out as strong a team as possible in the remaining games.
Tomorrow night's game is one that we feel we can go into and get all three points. Charlton will be a tough test though. We need to finish strongly and give the fans optimism for next season. All the pressure is on Charlton as they need to get a result. It should be an entertaining and open game.

I think we will break the losses record. It'll be a bad couple of games if we cracking the goals conceded at home record!

I've nothing against Charlton, but their relegation would give me another game to go to next season. I've grown fond of the Antigallican and its unspeakable bogs over the past few seasons.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Didn't realise that Charlton will be relegated unless they win tonight. MK Dons could be relegated tonight too (outside possibility - they lose, Blackburn and Forest draw, Fulham and Rotherham win) but I'd be surprised if they clung on past weekend. That'd be another game for you coz they play in Wimbledon?TonyDomingos wrote:I've nothing against Charlton, but their relegation would give me another game to go to next season. If results go right they would be playing a game in Kingston-upon-Thames.Worthy4England wrote:That'd be another game for you coz they play in Wimbledon?

Mean while, in the camp of the heroes, news is filterting through that:
" Defender Dorian Dervite (ankle) has returned to full training while veteran Emile Heskey will be assessed to see if he can start two games in four days. Strikers Gary Madine (hip) and Max Clayton (hamstring) remain sidelined.
So, a merciless and pitiless assault on our companions into the abyss, then. Since we are no longer in the Championship, this game can be regarded as almost the start of a new era and a taste of things to come.....I think?
