"So we were a shit team. In which he scored 10 goals in half a season. Terrible habit to have."

An especially terrible habit when that half a season was the first half and we were in a relegation position at the end of it. Even more terrible when after getting rid of the ten goal wonder we managed to stay up.
Do you think we became a better team without Madine?
The stats would say so...
The stats are that we got 0.929 points per game before Madine left, 0.645 ppg since. Pertinently, 0.929 goals per game* when he left, 0.645 goals per game since.

* The two averages with Madine are the same because we had the same number of goals and points when he left: 26, compared to 29 goals and 32 points so far this season.
Sorry, don't mean to be obtuse. I'm talking about last season when we sold him. During that season, before we sold him, we were in a relegation spot. After we sold him we ended up in a non relegation spot. Those are the stats I'm stating.
Undeniable.

But we'd scored 26 goals from 28 games before he left. We crept to 13(!) from 18 after.

Last season we were pretty blunt before he left, but after that we were almost hopelessly so.

It does seem to be a bit "which turd is the shiniest"...

We're talking the difference of 4 goals...which is a fairly fine margin.

Feedback is a very powerful natural phenomenon.

If Parkinson wasn't the manager, we'd have more points. If we had more points then Ken would have more money... is a crude example.
There is positive feedback, neutral stabilising feedback, and negative feedback.
Parkinson, Madine, and Anderson are a classic example of negative feedback. Fxck the four goal difference - with stabilising or positive feedback in existence we wouldn't even be discussing this stuff.

:D Well they clearly weren't that crucial - as Spots observed, we went from "relegation spot" to "staying up" - which is surely what counted?

Any how he'd have got a hat trick against Wolves and we'd have still lost 4-3.

I haven't got any figures for cost of squads to back this up, but I believe the automatic promotion of both Norwich and Sheffield United show it's not all about the money.

• One home win since Christmas.
• No clean sheets since Valentine’s Day.
• Went behind 34 times; equalised 5 times.
• No goals in last six games. Final goal of the season was an injury-time consolation own-goal in a home defeat to the team who finished bottom.
• No win by more than one goal in 69 league games. That’s before Christmas 2017. That beaten team have since been promoted and relegated again.
• Leading at half=time in three games. Losing at half-time in 21.
• Only scored in 10 home games out of 23. Of the 12 home games without scoring (excluding Brentford walkover), lost 11.
• Failed to score in 11 of 23 away games. Lost 10 of those 11.
• Club’s most-ever losses (30).
• Club’s worst-ever goal difference (-49). Club’s worst-ever goal difference per game (-1.065).
• 29 goals scored: club’s lowest ever goals-per-game (0.63). (The 1897/98 team only scored 28, but then they only played 30 games.)

That is really depressing reading, DSB. The players, manager and owners have been nothing short of embarrassing (KA is more of a disgrace). Hopefully we will still be around to re-build next season with new, hungry players, a more positive manager and a new owner(s) who can afford to pay the wages every month.
Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.

Heh, I didn't mean to depress, just to delineate. It's seasons like this that make the upswings all the more fun.

Someone's just pointed out we lost more times than we scored. You have to chuckle.

But yes, onwards and upwards. Get an owner who can afford to pay wages. Get a manager with new ideas. Get new players unsaddled with the stench of this last couple of seasons (let's face it, we were five freak minutes for a deserved relegation last year). Start again.

Reads like a depressing litany where the recurring answer is 2018/19.

Then after reading it, you recall that none of that list is our current biggest problem.

Thanks, DSB. :-)

And we didn't finish bottom!

Ipswich may well have been the cheeks hanging down lower, but we were definitely the smelly crack of the division's bottom.

We also lost five games more than them.

I think this iteration of the team should steer clear of stats. They don't flatter at all.

In summary
Bolton = stats bad and depressing
Other teams = stats good and interesting
What could've happened; did.
