Steel yourself. We could be put to the sword (again) Sheff Utd (a) 2.2.19 3pm

Post by Harry Genshaw » Fri Feb 01, 2019 12:16 pm

Another match, another thumping? For me they are the best side to come to us this season and I fear a repeat of the 3-0 hammering.

Even Madine will fancy his chances of grabbing one.

Any optimists among us for tomorrow?

Christ, it's tomorrow. Oh well, might as well roll on toward relegation.

I used to like Sheff U and I admire what Wilder has done but he's a narky blurt and it wouldn't surprise me if he spannered our loan move for Evans.

We might not get hammered because (Hull aside) Parky doesn't often open us up to it with Coyle-style game-chasing substitutions. I can't see us winning here, but then nobody could last season. Mind you, the bloke who scored that goal – and was the main man in the only six months we've looked even slightly capable in this division - is not only gone but playing for them instead.

He strikes me as an utter c*nt

I'd love us to win tomorrow but I no longer have any hope. I think it's going to be an even more miserable end to the season than 2015/16

Out of interest, and as it's a year since he left, I did a quick check on our league results post-Madine

P47 W9 D13 L25 F32 A71 -39 40pts

Goals conceded per game has actually gone down slightly from 1.643 with Madine to 1.511 without, but goals for has gone from 0.929 to 0.681, and points per game has dropped 8.3% from 0.929 (=42.7 over a 46-game season) to 0.851 (=39.1 over a season)

What kind of return are we heading for this season in terms of goals scored? And is it likely to be record breaking?

To be fair to Sheff U they have done well out of the Brooks sale (holding out for top whack, fair play) and invested well. Not run at a debt either I don’t think. An example of what you can do, within the rules.

In 29 league games we've scored 19 (0.655 gpg). Multiplied by 46 that has us on course for 30.137 goals.

In terms of pure goals-scored:
• We scored 28 goals in 1897/98, but that was from a 30-game season. (Out of interest, we still finished 11th in a 16-team top flight; we went down the following season, 17th out of 18, the first season with automatic relegation rather than the proto-playoff Test Matches.)
• In 1970–71 we scored 35 in 42 as we finished bottom of Division Two after a chaotic season of managerial upheaval. Send for Armfield!
• Fewest goals over a 46-game season was 39, er, last year. (We'd scored fewer, but over fewer games, in 2007–08, 1898–99, 1902–03, 1893–94 and 1979–80)

In terms of goals per game:
• We're on 0.655
• That 1970–71 was the worst we've had (35/42 = 0.833 goals per game)
• Second-worst was last season (39/46 = 0.848)
• Third-worst was 2015–16 (41/46 = 0.891)

In other words, unless we suddenly discover a bag of goals, three of the last four seasons have been three of our worst four seasons *ever* for goalscoring – and it's not entirely Parky's fault...

Meanwhile over the Pennines...

Not sure about that, Dibs. See the Twitter thread below: "#SUFC have consistently lost money since relegation from Premier League in 2007. They have reported profits twice since then, but these were due to special factors: £10m in 2009 due to £18m Carlos Tevez legal settlement; £31m in 2014 due to £35m waiver of inter-company loan."

I mean, "debt" is relative in this madhouse division, but they're not profitable.

Fair does - in my head they bring in more than they spend so run well; but that ignores some rather obvious factors such as wages! They are no Derby though!

Right at us and...we have a goal kick to start off. A wallop and...(we're playing in all blue today...oooh) Vela is in and we get a handball free kick via McGoldrick. And....Connel, Taylor, Sammi, O'Neil....then we lose it but Luca slides in to block. Some scores, a throw them and....O'Connell fires it forth. Back they come and....Hoobs clears to Sammi......who gets blocked off. A bit of less than cheerful stuff from mic man, we get a free kick and that ends with a throw to them...Sammi and....a throw to us. Taylor and....

Taylor and......Vela, Sami.....scross blocked for a throw by Norwood. We are hearing talk of a Whites sub already? Injury? ...Wheats gives away a free kick and...they get a shot in via Duffy. Matt clears and Sammi loses out but Connell clears...we sally via O'Neil and....we get a corner. Luca to take...(Grounds warming up on the line)....and a decent corner just couldn't be reached. Wallop them. Hobbs sends in back....we get a throw...

Some chat about this and that, then......a free kick is won by Sammi. And.....O'Neil.....cleared....Connell, O'Neil, Taylor.....Sammi and....O'Neil, Taylor.....Hobbs,....Taylor, Sammi.....Connel.......oh, almost a good pass to Donalson. Big praise about our passing game from mic man.

McGoldrick gets a cross in, Duffy does the same and they get a corner via O'Connel. And.........in and,,,Norwood....and another corner. A big one and.....Matthews gets decked and appeals to the ref as they get another corner. Donaldson heads clear then we get a free kick.

Chat, more chat, scores........then.....Connel wins a free kick 25 out and....O'Neil?....and..in and....they head clear then wallop. Sharp appeals for a cigar, gets nowt. Connelly a poor one and then it's back to Matthews. Meanwhile.....they have a free kick as Donaldson decks a Blade runner. And.....Henderson launches....Duffy cut out by Lowe and we sally forth. Connely, Lowe, Wheats, a wallop from Matt and Basham gets a mention.

Connelly, Connel and.....a throw them. They sally at us, mic man reels off a score or two, Vela cut out by Basham and back they come to give us a goal kick. A Matt wallop and....some chat...and......Sammi, Taylor, Sammi and....Basham clears. They come forth to visit and mic man is praising us so far. Sammi and.....McGoldrick wins it. Throw them and....Stevens and....some scores and twitter stuff, then.......Duffy comes, O'Connell crosses, they cross a low one from that and a stinger comes in and........we block it. Sharp wins then a free kick. Connelly clears...(why can't there be a few Smith and Browns?) Luca clears.....Stevens sends it back and...Basham feeds Norwood, O'Connel, Stevens, Duffy gets a soft free kick and.....Matt grabs it and sends Sammi away. Basham shoves Sammi over and we get....nowt.
