Wrecking Crewe - In search of a Tin Pot to piss in. Crewe Alex (H). FL Trophy 7PM 8/9/2020

Didn't see a match thread, so here we go. We might be broke and it might be Mickey Mouse, but this is the best chance of a Wembley trip for any team at this level.

Plenty of squad lads will be wanting in and I'm sure a few will get a chance, allowing for the competition rules.

Tough draw for the first group stage match, but Crewe are carrying a few knocks and we're at home so going for an optimistic 2-1. Important we don't take a beating days before the real season opener against Forest Green.

Points of interest will be whether Baptiste plays (3 games in a week would surely be too much), whether the Captain is kept in and what we do about the forwards. Do we ask Delf to keep running for 3 matches a week and do we risk Doyle when he's clearly important to our promotion hopes? Enough there to hold the interest, even if you're not too fussed about the trophy.

What do you lot think?

Aye, tough choices for Evatt. Play the older, experienced lads to improve their match sharpness or rest them to conserve energy for when it matters. I went to the game last year against City u21s where Crawford got his season ending injury in the last minute. It ain't worth it.

I expect a mix and match with the new lad (Miller?) starting and a few others who didnt start Saturday.

1-1 & we go out on penalties

As the wise man above me points out, it’s a tough decision that can’t achieve all aims. In some respects we need to keep the first-choice XI on the field to sharpen up and improve their communication/teamwork, but (1) they should feel competition and (2) pressing is tiring.

So I’d expect mix-and-match rather than wholesale changes. Maybe switch out the wingbacks to see what Mascoll and Hickman can do, and rest Baptiste for Delaney. I’d be minded to keep the spine together - the two wide centre-backs, Comley/White, Sarce, Doyler/Fonz. Maybe rest Fonz’s legs late on by giving Miller half an hour - he won’t be up to more yet - and the same for Crawford, maybe replacing Sarce to give him a breather. There’s an argument for seeing Tutte but I’d be wary of too much central disruption when we are trying to inculcate good habits.

Might depend on how tired they are - and for that matter how Evatt judges that; Parky and Allamby pored over the data to see who was fit and I dare say Evatt and his team will do similar. Tonight isn’t a nothing game but Saturday is more important - although four losses on the bounce wouldn’t be a good look.

“We have to stop giving away poor goals – and we’ve had this meeting with the defenders today,” he [Evatt] said. “We have to understand that first and foremost they are defenders and they have to defend the goal with their lives. It’s great we’re asking them to build attacks and play but they are going to be judged on clean sheets."

Amen to that Padre.

Yes boss. First of three group games (also Shrewsbury and Newcastle Kids). It’s the one where a draw gives you a point each but you have a penalty shootout for a bonus point.

Wingbacks, Greenidge, Delaney in for me. And Delf no more than an hour.

I'd change and rest as many as possible. Give others a chance to fight for places. I understand about cohesion etc but right now we need too see how is firing and who isn't. So play a different 11 and see how they do.

I think that might well be what Evatt goes with, but I've always had an issue with playing lads you know you need to sub off after an hour or so. At this stage of the season, coming off preseason, you're often vulnerable to pull or strain and once you have used a sub or two for injuries your plans are gone.

I think I'd rather give lads like Miller and Tutte an hour and risk them having to play 90. I think I'd be tempted to go with this, but it's probably too much rotation for Evatt at this time:

I can’t see Baptiste playing.
He could well rotate the wing backs.
I think Miller might start. Otherwise, same as the weekend I reckon.

1-1 and Crewe to take Brucie's Bonus (Forsyth not Rioja!).

Crellin, Hickman, Brockbank, Delaney, Taft, Gordon, White, Crawford, Sarcevic, Delfouneso, Doyle

Alexander, Jones, Comely, Darcy, Tutte, Miller, Senior

I'm really pleased to see Brockbank given a chance.

Delighted with that, to be honest. I'd have liked to see Comley get the chance to play a 90 to set his head right, but seeing Hickman, Brocky and Crawford start is fantastic. Really interested in this game now.

Average age of our defensive players works out at 22. What a chance this season is for some young lads to stake a claim and get their careers going.

Think there are a few involved in the prematch who are not in the side, yeah. Supposedly Santos is too.
