Exeter Expects. Exeter City v Bolton (A) - 19:00 - 12th Jan

Post by Worthy4England » Mon Jan 11, 2021 11:27 am

According to the local Devon live, Exeter Manager, Matt Taylor expects the three points tomorrow night for the home team. Exeter's current form shows 2 wins, 2 losses and a draw in their last 5 vs 1 win, 3 losses and a draw for us, so neither side in sparkling form, but Exeter have a few postponements on their card and sit 5 points above us with 2 games in hand.

Interestingly, their local paper blurb refers to us investing heavily in the team with Doyle. Sarce and Fonz in a nod to all those Bolton fans who think we're under-resourced :-)

Exeter are a club owned by the Supporters Trust after some shenanigans back in 2003, that don't sound too dissimilar to where we nearly ended up with Anderson. £650k from a Cup Tie against ManUre in 2005 went a long way to helping stabilize the Club. They've apparently played more seasons in the Third tier (League 1) than any other Club who have never made it as far as the Championship, with their last appearances in League 1, in 2012.

2016/17 saw them in bottom place in November and still make the play-offs (so to all the doubters - things are possible) - they lost out to Blackpool in the Final 2-1.

In an interesting twist, when they sold Dick Pym to Bolton as goalkeeper in 1921, the £5,000 fee enabled them to buy St James' Park.

One for Brucie - Dean Moxey was an Exeter City Academy graduate. So they have a lot to answer for.

In terms of team, there is probably a decision to make around 3 at the back v 4 at the back. Rumour has is Kioso has gone back to Luton for treatment which is a big blow on the right. Kieran Lee (dunno whether I've spelled that as "porn star) and Declan John should apparently be in the reckoning. Will be interesting to see what Evatt does.

Well with John now out it’s a return to square pegs in round holes, particularly if we keep to a back 3.

My pick would be a back four with Santos risked as an auxiliary centre half alongside Delaney. I’d have Hickman and Isgrove in the wide positions, Tutte, Lee and Sarce, with Doyle up top.

I suspect we’ll get Brockbank and Delaney and Santos with Jones and Isgrove at wingback, Tutte, Sarce and Lee/Thomason depending on how fit Lee is, with Delf and Doyle.

A 442 with Crawford/Thomason and Isgrove in the wide positions might be viable as well.

I actually feel for Evatt as he’s had his problem solving left back and probably best attacking out ball taken off him in a morning. I’m glad it’s an away game as I think it’s easier to set up to defend away from home. Where we at home I would be predicting defeat.

Delf should occupy one of the wide berths for me in a 4321.

Kioso gone. Declan John injured, for up to a month according to Ilesy.

Whether he was going to or not, surely he now must play a back four tomorrow, else we'll have Gethin and Brocky as wingbacks – unless he suddenly promotes Hickman and switches Tomo left. So yeah, Gethin and Brocky. Greenidge suspended so Santos +1 at the back: Baptiste the safest bet, possibly Delaney.

Forward of that there's not much to play with. You'd imagine Tutte behind Sarce and Lee with Tomo dropping to the bench (possibly replacing Lee at some point after the hour: no point running another signing into the ground). Front three of Delf and Isgrove wide of Doyle in a 4-3-3. We could try to pick a 4-2-3-1 but you'd have to drop or redeploy one of Tutte/Lee/Sarce from their best positions.

I’d happily go with the Delf from before December in a wide position in a 4231.

Baptiste and Delaney as centre halves in a back four? Or too slow. For me if Santos can’t play in a back four it makes him too limited a footballer.

I suspect your pick is now actually likelier than your estimate of Evatt's, with one exception (as BWFCi notes, Delf for Hickman).

I don't think he would risk Isgrove at wingback away to a decent team (play-offs in three of the last four seasons, and only a win below the second dotted line now with games in hand). And I don't think he should, either. Had you asked me yesterday, I might still have preferred the wingback formation, but with Kioso and John out then it's just daft. So it's reconstruction time again.

To be clear, we're now in a position where we have zero proper wingbacks; where we're not clear whether our best centre-back this season can play in a four; where we're proposing a two-winger system with just one (erratic) winger in the squad; where our presumably third-choice striker is a teenager who's played 19 senior minutes and hasn't been in a squad since the first week of the season; where in goal we have a 38-year-old or a ruined kid.

Funny how a morning can ruin your day.

In a back four I would play Santos (+1) and pray like hell that he can do it. I think we'd be naive not to expect the odd balls-up, which will be more exposed in a four, but we have very very little choice. As you say Bap & Delaney would be solid but slow – if we're playing a high line (and you must if you want to press) then we need at least one pacy player back there.

If we were at home I would agree. We’ve been backs to the wall away a few times this season and ground something out. Protect the point and see!

I would have been quite optimistic had John and Kioso been available, but this morning has dampened expectations. It's certainly not a forlorn hope, though, and I hope Lee can show himself to be a top signing.

I would go with the below lineup:

Gilks

Brockbank Santos Delaney Jones

Tutte

Sarcevic Lee

Isgrove Delfouneso

Doyle

If Greenidge wasn't suspended I think we'd have stuck with the team that finished the last match. As it is, I think Delaney will replace him and we'll line up in a 4-3-3.

Gilks; Brocky, Santos, Delaney, Jones; Sarce, Tutte, Thomason; Isgrove, Doyle, Delf

Lee to replace Thomason after an hour.

(Covid permitting, obviously)

Just heard Evatt interview and he’s absolutely spot on. Country in lockdown in worst position it’s ever been in since start of pandemic...Bolton Wanderers travelling down to Devon on a coach and staying in a hotel. Ludicrous. Absolutely mental. How is this allowed?

I wondered if we would be allowed to stay over, imagine travelling down in a day would put us at a disadvantage. As it is they will all be putting themselves at risk...cricket bubble this ain’t!

I’d have Greenidge nowhere near a back four. Not as a centre half anyway...emergency left back...may...probably not.

Teams about right, I’d like to see Hickman play, particularly if it’s a back 3, but it’s based on a memory that probably makes him better week in, week out.
