Up to the role is somewhat debatable given we had a reasonable record with him there.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 12:09 pmMJ showed fairly convincingly that he wasn't up to that role in this team.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 12:06 pmWe’ve had frequent mentions of ideally needing a defensive mid with some height who could cover centre half too. I don’t really think this is controversial. With the injuries we have having some sort of DM who could slot in at centre back would be welcome now.
So whilst we might have missed the type we do not miss the player.
Let’s say Toal and Santos are out for Saturday…who are you putting in who would do a better job than MJ or an equivalent type of player at centre back?
The argument is not that we shouldn’t have sold him but that the versatility such a type of player offered hasn’t been replaced.

Correct - although that’s news to me as I thought it was today. Oh well, off to the beach.
FWIW I agree with BWFCi - if possible, sign a good striker and borrow a backup defender. The defender shortage is temporary, but I’ve felt all season we’re short up top on quality. Sounds mad when we’ve scored so many but now Dion’s in a dip, I don’t “expect” goals from any of them.
Oh and I believe the window closes later for Turkish clubs, including those eyeing Victor….

Just cos I’m a journalist doesn’t mean I jabber in journalese
On the topic of “is player X good enough?”, I liked this tweet. Trust the process, etc.

Would you expect goals from Collins? He has as many league goals as Toal and Iredale this season.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 12:32 pmCorrect - although that’s news to me as I thought it was today. Oh well, off to the beach.

And I realise I'm being harsh on the lad, but in his current form he doesn't look to be a guarantee of goals at all.

Yes.
If you look at the data, or watch some replays, he's not been playing in the same role as the previous two and the service to him has dropped dramatically.
He's missed good chances, but he's also simply not been used properly.
Collins will waste the ball sometimes. He tries things other players don't and that'll happen. He will score and assist, though.

This is the other thing that excites me. I want someone else who makes goals happen, and it looks like Collins can pick a pass. Same last night with Ramsay, first half, when he took a quick free kick that deliciously evaded a defender and arrived at the forward. Nothing came of it but it made my heart soar.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 1:38 pmCollins will waste the ball sometimes. He tries things other players don't and that'll happen. I haven’t watched enough of Collins and frankly it’s up to experts to make these calls. But I’d say he was league one player of the season last year with 16 goals and loads of assists. If he had repeated that this season we’d not have any chance of signing him.
I get the ‘he’s not in the same form this season’ but he did it last season at this level so we know he has the ability in the right setup.

Dale deciding it didn't matter if all his football staff left because he was the secret of FGR's success has really gone well.
From that team and set up the the current mire.

Aye. There’s a man with no shortage of mirrors in his house.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 31, 2024 1:52 pmDale deciding it didn't matter if all his football staff left because he was the secret of FGR's success has really gone well.

Some team, that - but the fact the story is illustrated with a pic of the player in his FGR kit shows how well it’s gone for him at Cardiff. Not that I’m knocking him, but good coaching and management are vital, as is scouting potential. Let’s never forget that Rico Santos was about to go part-time as a delivery driver.

I hear Charlton have offered a better package for Collins, both club and player but we've offered more upfront?

Rob Edwards really rated Collins and there was a huge kerfuffle over keeping Collins at FGR at the time, from the public reporting.
The reports were that Edwards wanted Collins' contract renewal demands met and when they weren't it created some of the early issues there.
Obviously Edwards did alright without him, but he came up in some Edwards interviews over that season as Collins went from strength to strength.
FGR's DoF at the time was really, really good. Again going off what was said at the time, it was Vance who didn't want to renew certain deals at what was considered a fair rate and they then shed a load more at the end of the campaign.
It's hard to imagine that Edwards links keep popping up to our transfer targets for no reason. We seem to end up with a number of lads he's been able to have a good look at as a coach, but also deal with as individuals one-on-one.

Also I seem to recall Vance was pretty sulky when Edwards moved on. I can't remember exactly what went on, but I do remember thinking "Meow" at the time. Given Edwards was only there the one season and got them up, despite Vance seemingly not taking a lot of the advice given, it seems a bit misplaced.
