The Greatest EVER.....England World Cup/Euro cup moment

Post by Soldier_Of_The_White_Army » Fri Jun 02, 2006 2:50 pm

Qualifying rounds count.

I love the Owen and Gazza goals, and 1966 can host a whole page worth, but I would have to give it to Beckham's penalty against the Argie's as well! Say what you want about the man, but that took a huge pair of golden balls to step up under that pressure with everything that had happened the last time the two sides met, plus all the dirty Argie's trying to put him off. The expresion on his face when the ball hit the back of the net, was only matched when the final whistle blew confirming that his goal had won the game more or less knocking them out of the World Cup.

Honorable mention should also go to Becks for his freekick against Greece. Not just because it was a great freekick, but because of the timing and the sheer importance of it, meaning we qualified. I can't remember ever leaping out of my seat faster!!

I'm sorry, but given the thread title, Geoff Hurst's goal in the first overtime period in the 1966 final - no matter how controversial - has to be the greatest ever moment (apart from the final whistle).

I'd have to agree 1966 to be the best.

Though 5-1 vs Germany wasn't bad.

In my lifetime it's got be 5-1 in Munich, although thrashing Holland 4-1 in Euro 96 was a great day as well.

LOL! I could have been! I was level with the 18 yard line behind Gazza as that cross came in from the far wing against our German cousins.

I was suited up, as it was a corporate event. I was the host (with about twenty guests). I also boasted a full face-painted St George's flag. I was aged 42 at the time - what a tosser! :D
