World Cup Group Stage, Day 6, 14 June

Post by keveh » Wed Jun 14, 2006 10:14 am

So then, we are about to complete a full cycle of fixtures today, with the teams in the last group (Group H) playing, and two teams playing in Group A who kicked off the tournament last Friday.

Here are the fixtures:

Spain v Ukraine (2pm ITV)

Another tournament favorite (as ever) Spain take on the Ukraine in what should be a good game. I think that Spain will get a couple of goals against a Ukraine defence which as good as their attack, they have had 5 clean sheets in 5 friendlies this year but it wasn't exactly a challenge. We'll all get a taster of what to expect next season in the Premiership with Chelsea's Andriy Shevchenko.

Tunisia v Saudi Arabia (5pm ITV)

One word, Jaidi.

Saudi to win :D

Germany v Poland (8pm BBC)

I think it's hard to see where this game is going to go. Germany did score 4 in the first game but their defence didn't look very convincing, whilst Poland suffered a shock opening day defeat against the might of Equador.

Spain always underperform in the World Cup, and I don't think that will change. With Schevenko, Raul and Torres, I think this will be a high scoring game. Ukraine will want to perform well on their debut, and have the ability to go a long way in the tournament. 2-2

I can't see the Saudis being much better than last time, not another 8-0, but out in the group stage I think. 2-0 to Tunisia

Poland will be quite low on confidence, and even though their defence opened up too easily against Costa Rica, I think Germany will find this quite easy. 2-0

Ukraine are my outside bet to do well in this tournament. I think they were the first team to qualify for the World cup.

I believe they're the side that will surprise everyone, and I think they'll beat Spain tonight.

But, hey.... I've been wrong before.

Poland will be much more up for this local derby after the wake up call that was the ecuador game. bloody hell, ecuador could even qualify today if they beat costa rica so that should be a good game

Spain v Ukraine 1-1
Tunisia v SA 2-0
Germany v Poland 1-1

Looks like Spain's suspiciously easy group is working out exactly as FIFA planned.

One of the worst penalty/sending off decisions I have ever seen. I guess FIFA decided they hadn't helped Spain enough with the easiest group in the tournament.

They are saying on the radio it was neither.

Are you implying that the groups are a fix? Surely not?

Excellent 4th goal by Spain there. They've had a fair bit of luck in the game, but deserve the win nonetheless.

Spain are peaking much too early.

At least that's what I'll be telling all my students.

'Nah, you wanna be struggling against sub-standard opposition at this stage of the competition, like England ...'

I feel a lot of sympathy for Ukraine. Yes, they were a bit shell-shocked at the beginning, but they were starting to look much better at the beginning of the second half. That is, until that idiot referee decided he wanted to eliminate any chance of a comeback. Even on top of that, I thought Ukraine were robbed of a couple of chances by erroneous offside decisions. They didn't deserve to be crushed like that. Still, opens up some hope for Jaidi.

This Saudi Arabia / Tunisia match is awful, how the hell did they get drawn in the same group.

My fiver on David Villa at 40-1 is looking rather promising.

This Tunisia game is turd. Absolute cack. Jaidi is having a nightmare as per usual.

It hasn't been the best, two decent goals though.
