anyone clever enough for this??

Post by thebish » Tue Jul 11, 2006 3:15 pm

last one to get in a big quiz of proverbs/sayings with the vowels taken out..

eg.

NNGLSHMNSHMSHSCSTL an englishman's home is his castle
YCNTJDGBKBYTSCVR you can't judge a book by its cover
BSNCMKSTHHRTGRWFNDR absence makes the heart grow fonder

anyway, there's one left I can't get....

STRTNSSTFF

anyone genius enough to work it out?

The key is trying to isolate possible words and then seeing what you can fit with the rest of it. To me it looks like the opening word could well be 'start' or 'street' and the last could be 'stuff' or 'stiff'*

Remember that words like 'A' or 'I' could be missing completely. This could well change the sentence.

*blurred disclaimer - possibly none of these are correct :D

Last two words could be 'best off'? Or 'is best off' for the last 3?

thanks for the attempts..

I was trying to isolate the last word....

could be toffee, off, stiff, staff, stuff, fee, foe - but I can't think of any well known sayings ending an any of those words. Anythig that fits might help, though - becasue it might get one of the words that will then spark the answer.

so - (genuinely!) - thanks!

(and keep at it... please!)

Phil

PS - Montreal - star toon sues toffee - best yet!

it certainly fits - and it certainly makes the most sense so far (apart from "Start nose stiff") - but is it a well-known saying?

"strut your stuff" - and I'd have been hanging out the bunting....

"strut one's stuff" - and I'm tempted to hold out for another suggestion!!

you do get the best-so-far prize, though - which is a (virtual) round of applause and a (muffled) "Huzzah!"

Yeah it's a well known saying. I'll take my virtual applause and muffled huzzah and head back along the virtual M62, then...

I casually dropped your phrase into google - and it lit up like the back end of a big bus with lots of lights on the back.... (err..)

so...
