Blimey, that's been around over 700 years (although doubtless rebuilt and renovated over the centuries). Hopefully, someone will step in and reopen it. Wasn't Stanley executed on October 15?Verbal wrote:shut down

It's bad news, that. The only interesting thing in Bolton Town Centre other than Olympus chippy.
Hopefully someone will step in.

Cliff Morris did it......
Busiest pub in town, madness if it doesn't re-open.

Troll and proud of it.

Why would Cliff Morris do it?

Re: Ye Olde Man and Scythe
Sad news indeed. Been in many times over the years although not for some while. Great historical feature of Bolton and I hope somebody like the National Trust step in or it gets a new owner. That, The Flag, King Bill and the Swan Tap were among our earliest ventures into alcohol in late teens.

Re: Ye Olde Man and Scythe
Real shame this. So much history and character in this place its unbelieveable.
Its always been busy whenever I've been in, and not just on a Saturday night like a lot of pubs at the moment. I fully expect it will reopen in the near future because it has got to be a viable business for someone.

Who's that coming up the hill boys,
The Wanderers are coming up the hill boys,
They all laugh at us, they all mock at us,
They all say our days are numbered,
Born to be a Wanderer, victorious are we....

Blimey - if I had to pick a pub that was recession-proof, this'd be it!

It's not closed due to bad business. I'm sure more will come out soon.
Kico has closed today too.

B-hell, amazed.
That said, it's 20yrs since it got any of my money and I'm sure that wouldn't have stretched this long.

I still go in town occasionally and every time in the last few years it has been busy. Very busy. Strange.scotty wrote:Real shame this. So much history and character in this place its unbelieveable.

Presumably it is owned by his wife, Jaycee Jewitt, but if she didn't like the business why not just sell it. It is a grade something historical building so cannot be torn down.

This 'ancient hostelry' surely has to stay open... And the Howcroft might be converted into flats???
I think a stronger effort required from Bobo and Bruce...

I didn't know John had drowned, I thought he'd had a heart attack?
Anyway, if anyone wants to blame anyone about Bolton Town Centre, as much as Cliff Morris is a tempting target, this time look no further than Police policy on granting licenses.
