Oddly, Niven played Dusty Miller who in the book was actually American.
Quite right too. All Americans apart from the Native variety had English accents once upon a time.

:D I'm just thinking about how Miss Marple became American in Murder She Wrote etc. you could just see the clean cut Tom Cruise playing Jack Carter. Would be their idea of gritty....

He'll be called Wilbur, find a bald eagle and the town will be in the middle of a post office strike while the schoolkids do a remake of "Mean Machine" with the teacher as Burt Reynolds.

Nah, it'd be an American Baseball team escaping from a Vietnamese POW camp. Sort of Joe Di Magio on Viagra. Stallone already grabbed most of the glory in the original.

maybe against the Iraqis? Could have Mohammed Saeed Kazim al-Sahaf (Comical Ali) doing the commentary - "the motherland has nothing to fear from Ronaldinho, we will win at least 18-0" etc. ad infinitum.

Have they heard about Sharpe yet? With John Wayne and Victor McLaughlin gone and Chuck Heston about eighty they'd be struggling for convincing heroes. "Go on Boney, make my day"
