I think that McLaren's on an absolute hiding to nothing here. When results go badly then there are/will be calls for his head, yet if he sorts things out and takes us on a decent run playing some nice stuff then all the praise will be afforded Venables. What fert do?

I dont know, but I never rated him anyway. That, and he hasnt fixed a single thing he should be in control of: Lampard's inclusion to the detriment of every player around him being the big one.

better than Hunt. If Hunt had applied himself two seasons ago he could have had his name pencilled in as nevilles successor, but he's wasted 2-3 seasons of development

Agreed with that (except possibly the Venables thing - if it goes well it'll probably be how great Gerrard/Lamps etc are)

But then, we can't have a calm, rational attitude to England - it's forever Champions-Elect or Useless Tossers. Before the match I posted a piece by Martin Samuel, who's a fat beardy Bolton-hating tw@t but can write well, about precisely that bipolar hysteria, which completely backs up what you're saying about McClaren, Brucey.

Usually - as soon as I read 'By Matin Samuel' I default to an involuntary "And you can get to feck you big, fat, beardy tosser. I'll be reading nought of what you have to say on the matter" setting. However, I have to say that in my opinion, that's a superbly written piece.
