Re: What are you playing tonight?
So are you 'into' JS Bach yet. I'm not big on 'classical' but he is something else.Prufrock wrote:Trying to get into Classical music at the moment. Turns out, there's quite a fecking lot of it. Did a few of the big famous bits over the weekend to get me in the mood. Decided to give a few piano concertos a go as I quite like piano music (that's the stage I'm at). Reckon arias will be another one to do as well.
Tonight is Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2. Bits of it are awesome, but other bits are a bit too 'Russian'. Sounds like a parody of plinky-plonky music you'd get over the top of a sped up 1930's grainy video of a potato farmer with no teeth working hard for Mother Russia.
That's not a leopard!

It's funny you ask. I found a website where someone had listed their 10 favourite piano concertos. No.10) was that Rachmaninoff above. After posting that I listened to No.9) which was Bach's Harpsichord Concerto No.1 (apparently it isn't cheating to include it as its mainly played on the piano now). Wow. That's, as you say, something else.

Brandenburg Concertos are in that case a must listen.Prufrock wrote:It's funny you ask. I found a website where someone had listed their 10 favourite piano concertos. I'll check those out. In the mean time, I think I might be able to listen to Fur Elise forever!

I'm a total Stravinsky fan boy. Petrushka and Apollo being my favourite of his pieces.

Re: What are you playing tonight?
It is one of my favourites also! in fact I think i posted on it about 20 pages ago... It is wonderful. Do you know his string quartet no 8? Fantastic. And his 10th symphony is so grand, just magnificent (I like shostakovich a bit...).mrkint wrote:The turn this thread has taken is making me try and rediscover that Shostakovich number I really like. Re: What are you playing tonight?
Yes! I believe I first heard it when you posted it on here - thank ye in advance. I don't know of his string quartet number 8 or tenth symphony, but will endeavour to listen.
As an aside, Pru, WtW, others who may be interested...you may like 'Stars of the Lid', a Texan band who mix elements of classical with ambience. I saw them live in London before Christmas - it was in a church hall with an orchestra - and it was without doubt the best gig/concert I've ever been to. Absolutely beautiful. Such a shame they barely tour anymore.
Anyway, a couple of numbers you may like by them

Re: What are you playing tonight?
Ok I'll stop banging on about Skyrim (see gaming thread) sometime soon. But currently listening to the OST (it's on youtube. All of it) and by golly, it's bloody lovely. Maybe one for your classical aficionados.

might be worth skipping the first track though if you want something calming.

Re: What are you playing tonight?
I'll go with the bish on Chopin. Polonaise and Etude are blissful.
And then move on to Borodin.....Oh, and thow in Rimsky Kaorakov's Scheherezade for good measure.
