I'd say it was a similar situation to, for example, the Queen and that Benny from Crossroads dying on the same day. I know who'd be on the front pages.Bruce Rioja wrote:The passing of David Bowie seems to have somehow overshadowed that of Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart!

Re: This weeks RIP's........
That's very sad. I really liked Alan Rickman, who could do almost anything actor-wise from gangster, his fantastic medieval sherriff in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, to a Regency gentleman in Sense and Sensibility. Last and most recent film I watched of his was A Little Chaos, in which he played Louis the XIV and also directed. A real loss. R.I.P.Bruce Rioja wrote:Alan Rickman now, blimey. Aged 69. Re: This weeks RIP's........
A mate of mine interviewed him once and asked him what tips he had for playing the villain convincingly, to which Rickman replied "Always make him slightly camp", something he used to do very well indeed.TANGODANCER wrote:That's very sad. A sad loss. He made so many films more enjoyable from Die hard through Harry Potter to Galaxy Quest. He had great range but delivered with a slight edge of sarcasm it seemed to me. RIP.

Not a great week to be a 69 yr old British celebrity !!
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

You probably don't know the name Dan Haggerty but you'll know him better as Grizzley Adams. Passed away today aged 74. Thanks for the memories.

Re: This weeks RIP's........
I looked up some other British 'celebrities' who are or soon will be aged 69 yesterday.
There are some who I'd not miss.

Re: This weeks RIP's........
When I saw the headline that Dan Haggerty had died I thought it referred to the bloke from the doo-wop 80's band, Darts. However, he's Den Hegarty. It's a simple mistake to make, I'm sure. Colin Vearncombe , known professionally as 'Black' has passed away two weeks after being involved in a car crash in Ireland, aged 53.
Another little piece of my youth has just been chipped away. RIP.

I came on to post the same. Real shame. Only 53, after a car crash in Cork.Bruce Rioja wrote:Colin Vearncombe , known professionally as 'Black' has passed away two weeks after being involved in a car crash in Ireland, aged 53.

His album "Wonderful Life" is as good as anything in the 1980's. RIP

Re: This weeks RIP's........
I've just discovered that Marvin Minsky has died of a cerebral haemorrhage on Sunday night. he was 88 years old.
After serving in the US Navy in the Second World War he studied maths at Harvard and Princeton before joining MIT where he co-founded the field of artificial intelligence and where he worked on neural networks, robots, and theories of human and machine cognition.
He created the world's first ever artificial neural network. But my favourite invention of his was the 'ultimate machine': which was literally a box with a switch on it - whenever a human flipped the switch to 'on' the box opened to reveal an arm which extended out and flipped the switch to 'off' before retreating back inside and closing the box in on itself.

Aye sad loss to the world of AI. Read a lot of Minsky's stuff during my degree.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:I've just discovered that Marvin Minsky has died of a cerebral haemorrhage on Sunday night. he was 88 years old.
