Alcohol health warnings
"Warning, Alcohol contains .... well, alcohol actually. So ... be told".Alcoholic drinks will carry new health warning labels by the end of 2008 under a voluntary agreement between ministers and the drinks industry.
The labels will detail alcoholic units and recommended safe drinking levels.
Apparently, in an attempt to educate people who are, frankly, too fckng thick to be able to read we are about to put warnings on alcohol bottles.
Amazing. What next ?? ... any ideas ????
"Driving gets you places"
"Not sleeping makes you tired"
"Dying shortens your life"
(Grumble, whinge, moan ... )
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

Re: Alcohol health warnings
It is ridiculous. The binge drinking youths won't give a toss. People out having a drink with mates won't give a toss. People who like a glass of wine or cider or any alcohol to unwind won't give a toss. Who exactly is this supposed to target?bobo the clown wrote:"Warning, Alcohol contains .... well, alcohol actually. Instead of wasting money on this, they should give it all to me!

There will be consultation between the government and the drinks industry. The government's preferred warning that alcohol shortens lives, damages the liver and harms relationships will be watered down. (not pun intended)
After a period for reflection the warning will be as follows:
"If you can still read this you're not pissed"

Well, they got their own way over smoking and got no joy with healthy eating, so they have to be seen doing something "worthwhile" in the health field.
For years kids have been told chocolate is harmful to teeth. Now a "startling new survey" reveals it actually benefits them. Oh goody.
Next bright idea chaps! Sex perhaps. Oh no, can't go there; too many of our own people might ..er, object or be involved in things better not mentioned.

I'm not sure what an alcoholic unit is. Over here all beverages have the percentage of alcohol by volume or the proof on them. Some (US) beers are only about 3% alcohol, but I also have some overproof Barbadan rum (151+% proof) - there is no safe drinking level for that. But what is an alcoholic unit?

A UK unit is 10ml or 8 grams of pure alcohol and they set guidelines of a healthy amount to drink in a week although i don't know what they are without looking.Montreal Wanderer wrote:I'm not sure what an alcoholic unit is. Its stupid because they are saying that men should have 4 units a day (carnt remember what women have to have), So that means that we can only have 4 cans a day (Rubbish).
I think everyone will read it for just something to read while your in he pub, But then just ignore it and think sod it and drink as much as we all want.

Thanks, Muse (and commie) - scary reading - a generous measure of overproof rum does indeed exceed the safe limit. Might account for the Windies current performance.Muse wrote:A UK unit is 10ml or 8 grams of pure alcohol and they set guidelines of a healthy amount to drink in a week although i don't know what they are without looking.Montreal Wanderer wrote:I'm not sure what an alcoholic unit is. And like most goverment advice on health it's way out of date. Safe limits are thought be a lot lower now, especially for women.communistworkethic wrote:the suggested safe limit is Men 21 units per week, women 14.
a unit is 10 ml or 8g of alcohol.
a half pint 0f 3.5 % beer, cider, lager is 1 unit
a sall glass of wine 125ml is 1 unit
a short (25ml) of spirits is one unit
Doctors fear a massive increase in drink related health problems in 10-15 years time and it's the middle aged bloke glugging his generous glass of Shiraz, thinking it's one unit when it's really three, that going to be the cause, rather than teenagers' binge drinking.
