Best opening line to a song?

Post by CrazyHorse » Sat Nov 03, 2007 10:07 pm

As the title says - what's the best starting line to a song?

For me it's this classic Happy Mondays Kinky Afro line
"Son, I'm 30. I only went with your mother cause she's dirty..."

Any better than that?

Interesting is that, Batty. I've never been a particularly massive fan of The Smiths. However, my favourite all-time opening line is without doubt "I'm the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar."

Girlfriend in a coma, I know, I know, it's serious 'Girlfriend in a Coma'

The boy with the thorn in his side behind the hatred there lies a murderous desire for love 'The boy with the thorn in his side '

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour but heaven knows I'm miserable now 'Heaven knows I'm miserable now'

Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'

Punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate - will nature make a man of me yet ? ' This Charming Man'

From the ice-age to the dole-age there is but one concern - I have just discovered some girls are bigger than others 'Some girls are bigger than others'

Hand in glove the sun shines out of our behinds 'Hand in Glove'
Take me out tonight where there's music and there's people and they're young and alive 'There is a Light (that never goes out)'

Learn to love me assemble the ways now, today, tomorrow and always 'Shoplifters of the world unite'

I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving England is mine - it owes me a living 'Still Ill'

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head and as I climb into an empty bed oh well. Enough said 'I Know it's Over'

Good times for a change see, the luck I've had can make a good man turn bad 'Please Please Please'

Yeah but that's just an average opening line from an absolute masterpiece of a song. Likewise, I quote a particularly good opening line from a Smiths song and Batman feels justified in simply quoting the opening lines from his favourite Smiths songs. At least Pencilbiter's cottoned on with the splendid opening line from 'The Sound Of Silence'.

Balls to it

I'll just post some lyrics from a song I love

I got no time for the corner boys
Down in the street making all that noise
Or the girls out on the avenue
`Cause tonight I wanna be with you
Tonight I'm gonna take that ride
Across the river to the Jersey side
Take my baby to the carnival
And I'll take her on all the rides
Sto ut Serviam

That looks like the sort of utter shite and banal wank that the likes of Brian Adams or Bruce Springsteen blurt out. Am I close?
