Bish, I accept that legitimate can mean,as the OED puts it, "In extended use: valid or acceptable; justifiable, reasonable." I don't agree that something should be called both legitimate and illegal, even if the authorities turn a blind eye. However, I am not up on contemporary British or Australian usage so accept your definitions.thebish wrote:Montreal Wanderer wrote:I'm still confused. Lots of people smuggle or break the speed limit but it's not legitimate to do so. I fear much of the rest of the post is incomprehensible to me.
I think what 2399 is saying is this...
"legitimate" - as in "accepted practice" - the stuff is left out with this in mind - a bit like Freecycle* - or what the americans call a "yard sale" - but where everything is free. "legitimate" as in you won't get called names or looked down on for doing it. (even if it is technically illegal - ie. the authorities disapprove - but I doubt they routinely enforce their disapproval) - so it is not thieving or covertly going through peoples' bins (as if you were homeless and looking for food - or a conman looking for documents for identity fraud) - and would not carry the stigma that such activities would.
*over here we have summat called Freecycle - where people give away stuff that would otherwise go to landfill, and saves them a trip to the tip. what 2399 is describing sounds like a more free-for-all version of that.

you seemed confused by what he was trying to say. I was trying to explain his meaning. I am not for a moment suggesting that the terms "legitimate" and "illegal" are not confusing or that they are not mutually exclusive.Montreal Wanderer wrote: Bish, I accept that legitimate can mean,as the OED puts it, "In extended use: valid or acceptable; justifiable, reasonable." I was simply trying to help you understand the sense/meaning of his post - even though he had written it in a way you or I would never have written it.
this kind of scavenging is deemed more acceptable - and has no stigma attached - even though it is technically illegal.
the meaning is clear - the wording was poor.

It is true I had trouble following the meaning as well. A bit like parsing a1's posts on occasion.thebish wrote:you seemed confused by what he was trying to say. I was trying to explain his meaning. Re: 24....39....42....HUT! HUT!
I would have stayed up and watched it if I didn't have to get up early that next morning Nothing can ever replace football, but the NFL and rugby make welcome distractions now and then. There's a pub not far from me that packs in the American expats every weekend it's on.CAPSLOCK wrote:Why?2399 wrote:It's 2am, the draft on ESPN has just started, it goes till 2am!

Though having said that I wouldn't have been chuffed to discover we'd taken Mike Pouncey in the 1st round, but y'never know, maybe he is the answer to our running game issues, Verbal.

Thanks for the news. Wouldn't have minded watching but had football on and then it was NHL Playoffs. Can't decide how good my teams draft was. Will check it out tomorrow.

New England will win, everyone will want to punch tom brady in the face and people will still be wondering how on god's earth Seattle got to the Superbowl after being absolutely shite.
