The Pope, but he's dead now.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Sir Edward Heath - who I think you will find is now deader than the Pope!
... and if the opening poster thinks that Clare and Sarah from Hollyoaks are famous people then he's got a lot of living to do.

Re: Which Famous People have you met
In a longish life I have been in a position, fortunately or otherwise, to meet many well-known people. I have often found that a public person I approve of is quite different from the private person, and vice versa. For example, in Canada I approved of our former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau's politics but found him remote and offhand one on one. Conversely former Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard, whose aim was to break up Canada, was pleasant, thoughtful and charismatic. In the UK, I went to school with a number of people who subsequently became famous - for example Marc Cox in tennis, Brian Barnes in golf, Ian Balding in horse racing and I was at University (same classes) with Sir Bernard Cuthbert de Hoghton (now of Hoghton Tower) - they all seemed pleasant enough but who knows how they will have changed in fifty years. On the world stage I suppose the most famous would be Nelson Mandela and then Secretary General of the UN Pérez de Cuéllar. The SG was pleasant enough, though formal, while Mandela was a warm, down to earth, rather wonderful person (which rather surprised me).

I further know that Monty has also met Hugh MacLennan, which, for some reason, he hasn't mentioned

Re: Which Famous People have you met
one of my church members once met the queen and said:
"has anyone told you that you look very like the queen?"
to which the queen replied:
"How terribly reassuring!"

Re: Which Famous People have you met
Bruce is correct although I'm not sure how he knew. Hugh MacLennan was a Canadian author (The Two Solitudes, Barometer Rising, etc.). He was also an English professor at my University and I would have lunch with him (and others) at the Faculty Club on many occasions. I also knew his student, Leonard Cohen, although I haven't seen him since the 1970s. Hugh was chatty, Leornard was, oddly enough, quite shy.Bruce Rioja wrote:He's that bloke that you just read about.......... Re: Which Famous People have you met
Had Francis Lee as a neighbour in Westhoughton and met quite a few footballers at his parties: Rodney Marsh, Mickey Thomas, Dave McKay, Mike Summerbee, Freddie Hill and a few I've probably forgotten. Were they nice? Freddie Hill's a grand lad and very down to earth. The rest, gee I can't remember. The liquor flowed freely and it was all very friendly so they must have been.
