Desert Island Books.
Not sure if we ever did this before, but what would your books be if you were shipwrecked on an island and could only have ten?

I take it the Bible is for a crafty jimmy-floyd and the other 9 are for moral sustenance.
The Dummies Guide to
building a raft
making fire
fishing with sticks
signalling ships (with morse code appendix)
drinking one's urine
making houses out of coconut trees
Well you get the picture.

Would have to be the longest books I could find for a desert island... Ulysses by James Joyce (I'd need to be on a desert island to finish it).

For me:
The Bible. I'm not Christian, but it's a hell of a book nonetheless.
Proust, In Search of Lost Time. Perhaps I would finally finsih the thing.
Peter Handke, Repetition.
Kafka's Diaries.
Collected Shakespeare.
Collected Rilke.
I think that would be enough.
Pretentious tw–t.
Re: Desert Island Books.
Is The Bible really a hell of a book?
CUlturally important to our society, yes. In a literary sense, in a similar vein to plenty of classics, but just not as good. Ovid's Metamorphoses, all the cool stuff of the Bible, better written, and way less preachy! Imagine the self loathing after a good desert island bout of onanism!
Anyway, My desert island book and luxury are always the same.
Book: How to drive a speedboat
Luxury: A speedboat.

That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

Re: Desert Island Books.
Do any of you ever read books more than once? Never done it in my life.
So, my list would be all the books that are still in the study unread.
If I were ever to read a book for a second time though, it'd be a toss-up between Notes From a Small Island and To Kill a Mockingbird.

The Count of Monte Cristo
Dune
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists
Don Quixote
1915
Remember Arnhem
The rest I might add later as thy come back to me.
I read mostly non-fiction btw.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Re: Desert Island Books.
A big, HUGE, neverending book of lyrics ... with the basic melodies set out. Otherwise I'd rapidly be singing "dum, dee-dum, de-dee" to almost everything.
Ditto of an encyclopedia and yet again of an Atlas. The biggest fck-off one in existence. Not so I could escape, but so I could focus on what was where, remember & plan or the future. Plus, I suppose a "how to" handyman tips type one ... being on a desert island an all that. Finally a ginormous book of crosswords ... with answers in the back as otherwise that odd one or two you simply can't get would kill me off over time.
The, yep ... for fun ;
Lord of the Rings
Bill Brysons ... Short History of Nearly Everything
The collected Smiley Novels of John le Carre
Bring on the Empty Horses by my dopelganger, David Niven
Nicholas Nickleby
Luxury ... a (solar powered, so ner-ner ne-ner ner) sythesiser/keyboard
(I assume a working laptop & internet access aren't available)

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

See, I am with books like I am with holiday destinations. I'm never going to see all the world but I'll die trying. As such, I never go back to anywhere regardless of how good a time I've had there.
