Wow. Very very sad news. Puts things into perspective. The bowler must feel horrendous too. Awful stuff.

RIP, Phil. He died doing the thing he loved, but far, far too young.

No words that will help. R.I.P and commiserations to his poor family.

Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
"Life is unfair" and "Only the good die young" are clichés that come to mind. In this case both are, in a sense, true. As jonnybwfc found out, Phil Hughes was noted for his general demeanour, openness and dedication to cricket years before this awful accident. So, should you come across comments from his fellow players and those who worked with him there's every chance that they come from the heart and are not just empty sentiments expressed because it's 'the right thing to do'.
Please spare a thought for Sean Abbott. What he might be going through at the moment I cannot even begin to imagine. He and Phil were friends and ex-team mates.
It's been a sobering day for all cricket lovers.

Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
. . . The game goes on.
The One Day International World Cup is under way. Over the next few weeks men in pyjama suits will be strutting the turf of your antipodean cousins. I have followed with interest all the pre-game hyperbole expressed by players and commentators alike. That's because I find it amusing. It seems that from a batsman's perspective every ball should clear the boundary while the bowlers, given the plethora of appeals, believe that every ball should claim a wicket. Apparently yesterday AUS played ENG with ENG getting itself trounced. It seems that the various comments offered by captain and coach prior to the game were, to put it mildly, a bit off the mark.
I didn't watch the game as slog and run has never had appeal. Nevertheless I did look at the scorecard this morning. Poor Taylor, 98 not out. Damn shame that, old chap. Some sort of umpiring misdemeanour robbed him of the chance of a century?

What an innings from Jos Buttler.
A last-ball victory from an impossible position. Against the sworn enemy. On their patch.
Does it get any better than that?

Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "What you've seen today is that you can change mindset quickly with players and a coach who want it. England got well beyond par. I can't remember seeing an England one-day performance as good as that."
Well you wannabe Geoff Boycott talkshiter that's because it was an England highest score record.

With you there, he's an arrogant smug know it all. Never liked him, despite the admittedly fine job he did as captain.jaffka wrote:Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "What you've seen today is that you can change mindset quickly with players and a coach who want it. This makes no sense to me.Worthy4England wrote:Blast you Duckworth and Lewis.
There was 37 balls left before rsp. It resumed with the number of balls available just over one third of 37. Logically the runs required should be reduced by a similar amount. But no, the target was well over half the 54. It's just too complex.Rain halted play with England needing 54 from 37 balls and the revised target of 34 from 13 proved too great.

Re: creeeeeeeekeeeeeet
Going quite well at the moment, Mogran just made his 100 (103 to be precise) and currently need 58 from 79 balls.

An interesting couple of minutes reading.
Now it's time to address and fine tune the Duckworth-Lewis system (or find a fairer system).
