Saw him playing for Farnworth SC when my Uncle Jeff was playing for Daisy Hill. He bowled a bouncer at Larry Booth (pre-helmets) who pulled his bat up to protect his head. It went for six over slip. Nae shite!

That made me laugh remembering Sammi's amazing "full toss" this week, that cleared batsman, keeper, slips and all and went straight to the rails for four.

Someone told me - or I read - that all the kids in the West Indies want to play baseball and make loads of money in the USA... Cricket viewed as an eccentric pastime... CLR James turning in his grave...

I'm not sure that is quite accurate. I don't think too many professional baseball players come from the British and former British West Indies - they are mostly from the Spanish-speaking islands. However, it seems true BWI athletes do try to make it in sports other than cricket. I could be wrong on this...

it isa real tradgedy that american sports have ruined 3 generations of unstopable fast bowiling attacks and endless top grade batsman, the windies are slowly making a come back but i take roberts,holding,lloyd and richards over edwards,roach,chaunderpaul and lara everytime

I'm not sure that you can point the finger at American sports at all. In my opinion the West Indies produced no end of naturally gifted cricketers that they thought would never end. Brian Lara was a man on his own surrounded by taveners. Meanwhile, the rest of the world (and especially the Aussies) have worked at their game no end. I have as much trouble recognising England as being the top test side in the world as i do recognising Luke Donald (winner of next to nowt) as being its top golfer.

Other than England have won plenty over the last few years, including the Ashes in Oz...

I think they've undoubtedly been the best Test team over the last 2/3 years, but that said, it has the odd "non-Englishman" in there

Wonder if it would look half as good without Strauss, Prior, Trott and KP over the last few years...

I'm not sure about the point the finger bit - certainly nothing I'd know about in any great detail - but is a quote that's trotted out a few times by West Indies cricketers/cricket managers. I'm sure when they had people like Sylvester Clarke and Patterson they thought it would never end, both of them would have probably got in any other team.

But they have deserved it, Bruce. I suspect that you fear that the bubble will burst, which it probably will eventually. Look at the Australian team now and then that of a mere decade ago. Fortunes wax and wane as we all know; enjoy it whilst it lasts. Go back another decade or so and you'll find Australia was amongst the 'easy beats' of the cricketing world. When Alan Border was appointed captain he inherited a team of journeymen. With the help of the selectors he forged a team with a steely will to win. Of course this was after taking over the captaincy from Kim Hughes and was during or just after the 'World Series' of cricket. Test cricket the world over was a shambles with players playing politics and chasing the money available (not that one can blame them as cricketers got very little in the way of remuneration for their effort and skills.)

Border's foundation was laid for Steve Waugh to build on. That was the start of Australia's resurrection as a cricketing nation. I can't comment upon the England teams over the years, but I'd be surprised if it didn't follow a similar pattern.

The West Indies? I suppose by my 'becoming a force' I meant that they are no longer the whipping boys they were a few years ago. There is so much politics involved in West Indian cricket - with the various nations involved - that I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to the eventual outcome.

So. Andy Roberts - 47 matches - 202 wickets - ave 25.61 in tests. Joel Garner 58 matches - 259 wickets - Ave 20.97 in tests.

And yes I've seen them both.

Marshall for me was slightly better than both. Holding was pretty scary too.

no i think roberts was better he really got under the bowlers skin. i can also you alot of garner wickets can from the tail wheras roberts took mainly the middle order out

They both took out 33% of batsmen 1/2/3...

In fact they're pretty head for head right down the order.

Batsmen 4-7 - Roberts 35%, Garner 34%

Tail - Roberts 32%, Garner 33%
