Re: Wine
^^^ It is Lidle LK.
I'm very open to wines at Lidl etc. and gave their "cheap" Barolo a go ... & advise against it. Very ghin and deeply unsatisfactory.
I did find some German red there in the summer and, having had good previous experience with this rarity, bought 3 & wish I'd bought 30. It was tremendous. All gone by the time I went back.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

And therein lies the difficulty with recommending wine. I like something that someone else thinks is shit! It kind of makes a mockery of ratings and scores and the likes, as with everything taste is a very personal thing.

Re: Wine
Taste, as ever, varies. But I'd never have bought this planning the lay it down for years ... nor decant for hours. So maybe I'm just not up to this particular one. Barolo, in general, is very much approved of in Casa Bobo. Just this one that I felt wasn't what I'd hoped for.Lord Kangana wrote:And therein lies the difficulty with recommending wine. True, but you seem to have my tastes sussed. Your call on the 2009 Cotes du Rhone was an absolute belter. Bought a mixed case in a Belgian supermarket and wish I'd bought every bottle they had.Lord Kangana wrote: And therein lies the difficulty with recommending wine. Oh, as an everyday tipple, Morrison's are knocking out Trivento Malbec at £6. Well worth getting a few in. No point in anyone going to their store in Harwood though.

The French Government suggests between 1 and 2.5 bottles a day!

Re: Wine
I'm afraid I'm too old (and thirsty) to wait 18 years to age a wine in my cellar! And buying a '97 Barolo now would likely bankrupt me. I've had very good Brunellos on occasion but I understand some producers are a bit dodgy. Amarone has never let me down.Lord Kangana wrote:True, it's a bloody minefield. And an expensive one to boot.
The problem you may be encountering is that Barolo takes an eternity to age. The last but one I had was a 2008 - I decanted it for 7 hours, and it was very nice, but still young. 2006 as a vintage is going to take forever to soften. And to be frank, there's little worse than a sour, metallic young Barolo. Makes you feel ripped off.
The insiders tip at the moment for drinking quite young is 2007 and possibly 2011 ( I hope so, as I've bought a few). '97 is drinking perfectly at the moment, but where you'll find one for less than a month's mortgage payment is anyone's guess.

I'm liking the fact I've one just down the road in Leeds. Had a Godello tonight, which I'd never even heard of until I bought it, but enjoyed.Bruce Rioja wrote:Called in Majestic Wine today - Came out £100 lighter.

Re: Wine
Long story short......Eldest son bought me at xmas, amongst other things, a 'wine aerator'. Looks like a sex aid, pour wine from bottle into top of it, it makes a gurgling sound, comes out of other end into glass and turns a £6 bottle of wine into a £30 bottle of wine. Fact. Don't know how it works, but it does.
Re: Wine
I went to a decent restaurant in the Netherlands and they used one. The people I went with (and better informed than me) said it was good. Not seen one since.Il Pirate wrote:Long story short......Eldest son bought me at xmas, amongst other things, a 'wine aerator'. Re: Wine
Housemate got one too. We tried it out, basically taking the piss and expecting it to taste the same but it really does improve the wine. I was amazed. Had to do a couple of bottles and various double blind type tests to make sure. May perform another experiment at weekend.Il Pirate wrote:Long story short......Eldest son bought me at xmas, amongst other things, a 'wine aerator'.
