my mate has 2 B-i-L's, one is his wifes brother, the other is his sisters husband, and they are all best mates, he refers to them both as 'my B-i-L' like they're the same person. i can never quite get my head round it for some reason? - suppose it must be the same for millions thinking about it....

Well well well. It's blatant favouritism. Just look at the stats. Wine started out on 25th August (fully 19 days ago) and has had 58 posts on 3 pages. Ale began on 11th September (just 2 days ago) and has accumulated 63 posts on 4 pages.
But Wine is a sticky and Ale aint. Snobbery of the first order. I blame that Lord Kangana, bloody aristocracy.

A landlord once told me that from an 88 gallon barrel of real ale, they get 3 days before it goes off and day 3 can sometimes be dodgy. For some pubs it's just not worth the risk if they don't feel they can shift enough, hence the proliferation of pubs selling high volume crap.
I think most barrels these days are 9 gallons (72 pints), which good landlords lose approx 4 pints off in the beer they pull off each day and the wastage at the bottom. my local gets in the full 9 gallons for beer they know will fly within two days. For less well-tested stuff he gets pins in (four and a half gallons).
Depends on volume sold and strength of ale. My favourite local buys in 18 gallon barrels of the high volume ales - they could buy in 36's but don't have the cellar room. All the rest is in firkins.

A lower strength ale - below say, 4% - will go off more quickly than a stronger one once it has been tapped. A 5% and upwards ale can last five days easily without detriment. Keeping the correct cellar temperature is very important, 13c is the ideal and maintained automatically with coolers and pythons on the lines to the pumps.

Just enjoying a Goddard's fuggle de dum (IoW brewery). To be followed by a St peter's ruby red ale, from St Peter's brewery Suffolk & available at Tesco. The Goddard's is also available at Tesco down here, but wouldn't know if it is oop north. Both well worth a try if you see them.

Much as i like ya;.............No. But I'll make a toast to ya when I drink my next one! Another that I like & is similar to fursty ferret, but I think a little lighter (but stronger iirc); is Canterbury Jack. (with a bit of IoW Blue cheese & crackers)
