They are both the children of Goodbye Mr Chips.
And the best 'school for boys drama' is The Browning Version (Terence Rattigan).
IMHO
Though a sad day, the passing of an outstanding talent, and another victory for the vile depression.

When he performed in front of Prince Charles and Camilla some half dozen years ago, he called them Chuck and Cam. They seemed to be amused, even if Victoria might not have been.

Lauren Bacall. You know how to whistle, don't you? I sure liked her back in the 1950s.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

A real shame, that. He only retired last year - I made a point of listening to his final broadcast.

I loved it how you'd know if, when playing away, we'd won, drawn or lost before he'd got to the goals scored bit, simply by the tone of his voice.

I don't think I had ever seen what he looked like until the BBC article. His voice was very familiar though. RIP.

Re: This weeks RIP's........
Genuinely saddened today to learn of the passing of one of my all-time favourite radio broadcasters, Gerry Anderson. A man of clear warmth, wit, intelligence and integrity. His former Radio 4 show, Anderson's Country, was possibly the finest radio show I ever heard. Shame he got hounded off by the stiff pricks amongst regular R4 listener-ship that couldn't deal with his (incredibly mild, soft and warm) Ulster accent.
RIP Gerry. Thanks for those endless hours.

I'm very saddened by the fact that this has become a celebrity death thread. Almost as if the passing of non celebs isn't noteworthy.
James Foley died in the last few days in an event which made me feel physically sick for most of yesterday and left me questioning how anyone can have their humanity stripped away to the point that they could do that to another human being.
RIP James. A man of courage and conviction. My thoughts go out to his family. I can't imagine what they are going through.

It's a completely open thread as far as I can see.Bijou Bob wrote:I'm very saddened by the fact that this has become a celebrity death thread. Almost as if the passing of non celebs isn't noteworthy.

Not so B.B. No rules or preferences. Lots of posts deal with people passing who many know from various different things, ages, eras, personal preferences etc, etc. Not unknown for folk to mourn the passing of a family pet. None are ignored as far as I know?Bijou Bob wrote:I'm very saddened by the fact that this has become a celebrity death thread. Almost as if the passing of non celebs isn't noteworthy.

Been around a long time and all my film-going life. The grand old man was an excellent actor and even amongst his more serious roles, Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street still sticks around as memorable fun. R.I.P. as another star fades away.jaffka wrote:Richard Attenborough has passed away.
