I knew i was past it when...

Post by Andy Waller » Fri Oct 24, 2014 6:49 am

On the back of pinging my hamstring and damaging my ACL, I've been advised to give up 11 a side football by my doctor. At 35 I've done ok and I'll still play 5 a side but it's made me feel a bit old!

What else have I got to look forward to?!

Loads. Lots and lots.

Failing eyesight, weight increase, hair loss, type2 diabetes, blood pressure problems. It's all out there in front of you. Don't be so negative.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

18 months ago, I played 11 a side as part of a lads versus dads match at the Arena. I was always very quick over short distances and set off after a ball that went over the top, only to find my legs no longer seemed to work. Some 16 year old kid came steaming past me and left me for dead. Gutted.

I home you honoured the spirit of the game and launched him 3 feet up into the air?

You got there first. That would be the very least I'd expect.

My sign that it was all over was when a referee overtook me.

I did 'accidentally' trip him up.

All of the above but the worst was when the very attractive 30 year old in our office said to me

"Aww, I think of you as my work dad"

Seeing a bald bloke walking across reception on the works security cameras, then realising it was me was another low point.
"Get your feet off the furniture you Oxbridge tw*t. You're not on a feckin punt now you know"

Ah, the Hair Thing. I once locked up a nutter who took one look at me and said "You, you bald, blonde c***, you're dead next time I see you". I was 24. Cue weeks of pish taking, brochures for wigs and hair pieces being sent to my home address and a mop head being glued to my locker, with a large circular hole cut in the top.

A couple of girls at our place were talking about Robin Van Persie being "fit" (in the aesthetic sense, obviously!) anyway, one of them said to me "how old is he"

When I said about 31/32 they went "eurgh really? I didn't know he was THAT old"

I'm 31 and they're both pretty tidy.. Gutted really.

I'm having a go at playing Sunday League before my 30th birthday next year. Last week in the changing room we got a young lad down for a tryout - the manager asked him his date of birth and when it ended in '96' half the squad nearly retired on the spot

Discovering all the other injuries and niggles that you don't currently know you're carrying, and only flare up once you stop playing and your leg muscles go into hiding. Mine was my left knee cartilage.

That doesn't mean you're past anything - simply that you have work to do.

Hop to it, Danny Boy.
