I wasn't consulted on this decision and don't really like donkey's.
I hope you responded in kind by getting her half a kilo of carrots.

Classic. .... what was the wife's reaction to her mother's caring gift ?

THAT's the real test.

I often wonder about this christmas gift charity substitute stuff... not that I object to charity - but i feel it is summat you should do in addition to doing christmas and birthdays...

using other peoples christmas and birthday presents to do your own charitable giving seems like a bit of a miserly money-saver to me!

Console yourself with the thought that hay probably wasn't purchased with it. The money probably went to secure a top notch executive, who has spent it on his Christmas turkey, but who in the New Year will be busy organising for extra hay collection.

Mrs D found the funny side of it especially when I mentioned I didn't particularly like donkeys.

True dat. Every year I tell folk in the office that I won't be buying Christmas cards but making a donation to charity instead. I never do though :)

I'll have you know I texted a fiver to the NSPCC earlier this week. I knew it was a mistake. Some agency working for them have rung me 5 times since seeking a monthly direct debit.

I assume you've told them to remove your number from their lists? A little publicity will deter them...
