Why bother with second hand rather than new when if you buy new you get three years absolutely hassle free, no MOT, guaranteed service prices, and free breakdown cover for the entire three years.
Depending on exactly what you want I'd suggest looking at a Skoda, either the Karoq or the Kodiaq. Really. Why aren't they in your list?
We want to buy outright and with the eye water quotes to get us home, along with the business costs, house costs etc all at once we just don't have circa 30k to spare to go new. We don't need fancy, just reliable and capable with decent boot space.

Monty, we'll be running seasonal tyres, but definitely want the 4 wheel drive as we can't afford to not be able to get around in bad weather.
You can get the Karoq, brand new for less than £25,000. (or is that the Kodiaq? Anyway, one of them).

Plus where in the remote highlands are you going? Anywhere near Badachro? If so, buy the pub as well, I need someone to take over and keep it sweet when Martyn, Mark and Lesley leave.

Why can't you bring your car back with you?
Imagine you'd get utterly f*cked on import duty (and VAT).
Wouldn't have to pay D&V, if he's had it longer than 6 months in his previous country of residence

VW Tiguan fine but it’s 4motion not 4wd, which is supposed to be a bit different. Fine in the snow t’other week but I don’t drive like a cock either 😆

Ruddy 'eck, AT, that's some sort of climate change innit?

Anyway, all the best with the move and the new venture.

Thanks Dujon. Luckily we'll have time to adjust as we get back in time for summer, which is not too dissimilar temperature wise to winter here!

Avis keep giving me all these small SUV's. There isn't a one of them yet of which I've thought - 'you know what? I'd have one of these'.

The emphasis seems to be on having them look like something that they're clearly not.

Absolutely. Comfortably drives though. I'm constantly tempted just for the comfort factor!

That said, a colleague's just got the new VW Tiguan and absolutely loves it. Good on long runs, comfort wise, too, apparently.

Yeah. I mean these are basically cars for middle aged/semi-old men like me who want something very comfortable but don't care what it is - (and mothers taking their kids to school who think an SUV means they can do what they like).

I've test driven a tiguan and was thoroughly tempted.

I can't believe how much more expensive cars are in the UK, well I can, but you know what I mean. Our car here is a genuine 8 seater 3.6l V6, reasonably fuel efficient for the size and has loads of stuff like rear cameras, electric seats etc. Cost 26k brand new and would cost 40-50k for something equivalent in the UK :(
