Still raging. It's now the second worst ebola crisis ever. It is developing along exactly the same nearly exponential curve is started along last time in West Africa, but this time it's hidden deep in the jungle. Expect it to pop up in a locality near you. Soon...

By BRITTANY SHOOT December 7, 2018
The ongoing Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now reached Butembo, a city of over one million residents near the Ugandan border, according to the Associated Press.

The 2018 Ebola outbreak in the DR Congo is the second worst in world history. So far, there are over 470 confirmed cases and more than 270 deaths due to the viral hemorrhagic fever, which has an extremely high fatality rate. Another 100-plus cases are under investigation, and Congo’s health ministry confirmed an additional 13 cases on Thursday, the highest one-day total since this latest outbreak was declared in August.

Part of the difficulty in containing the epidemic and vaccinating individuals against contracting the virus is the ongoing political unrest in the African nation. Rebel militias targeting Congolese civilians and soldiers, as well as United Nations peacekeepers, have stymied efforts to contain the epidemic. Indeed, on Friday, Reuters reported that militia members are suspected of killing at least 18 civilians near the epicenter of the outbreak in the eastern part of the DR Congo.

There’s an additional cause for concern as the outbreak continues: whether the vaccine stockpile will hold up. Specifically, health experts are concerned that the reserve of an experimental vaccine will run out as the epidemic continues without any sign of abating, according to the AP.

This Ebola virus outbreak in the Congo is second only to the outbreak in West Africa in 2014, which killed over 11,000 people.

Official figures are 1240 dead. Far fewer than the 11000 in West Africa. However over 14000 are reported killed between rival militias in the east of Congo: the trouble is the rival militias have nowhere near 5000 combatants, never mind 14000 fighters.
Another Medicine Sans Frontier clinic was burned down a fortnight ago causing infected patients to flee; three refugee centres (population of ~ 12000 in total) are said to be in meltdown and Rwanda and Uganda have denied reported cases of Ebola in cities with over a million occupants. Rwanda and Uganda have direct flights to UK, France, Belgium, Germany, etc ..

It's coming...

Confirmed. Crossed a border for first time this outbreak - from DRC into Uganda. (If it was contained, as the WHO insist, it wouldn't have popped up in another country now, would it!)
Just wait 'til it hits Rwanda and South Sudan, because they're really really prepared

Jane Aceng, the health minister of Uganda has tweeted: "As of now, there is NO confirmed case of Ebola in Uganda"...

How very disingenuous of you Jane. In fact - there is no CONFIRMED CASE of Ebola in Uganda. You merely have two confirmed deaths from Ebola; six confirmed cases who have been sent back across the border, literally marched across the border unescorted by health workers; six unconfirmed cases of people in isolation with four of them displaying symptoms; two missing health workers who have fled after handling the bodies of the dead; public weddings, funerals and other gatherings banned in the Kasese district of Uganda; the military on alert but don't have a clue what they are on alert for; and a porous badly managed border with a war ravaged province in which at least one thousand four hundred people have died of Ebola and the rate of infection is increasing, Jane.

Latest case reported a mere forty miles from the border of South Sudan.
Oh shit.

Here is a full update if you're interested:
https://www.msf.org/drc-2018-ebola-outb ... sis-update

Headline figures are - 2260 confirmed cases and 96 unconfirmed, with 1586 confirmed deaths. That's a 70.18% death rate by the way.

A drinking buddy of mine is prone to spitting a bit as he talks, late in the evening.

I'm already thinking of how I can engineer a serious falling out.

Do what the Japanese do. They hand you one of those dust masks. If you don't accept it, you're the one who has broken social convention...
